This book serves as an excellent history of how the Blue Ridge Parkway came to ...By Wendy BI have driven the Blue Ridge Parkway 3 times and look forward to going back as many more times as possible. This book serves as an excellent history of how the Blue Ridge Parkway came to be. It has awesome old pictures from when they first started building planning it and the story itself is well written. I definitely recommend this book if you plan to ride the Parkway or live in the area and simply want to know more about the history. The Blue Ridge Parkway has one area that. to this day. is an architectual miracle. The Linn Cove Viaduct literally hangs off the back side of Grandfather Mountain and it is a thrill to drive on it and realize that the road youre on is attached to the mountain buy huge nuts bolts is being supported from below in order to protect the ecology of that area. Plus. the view is amazing; not to be missed!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very good book for anyone on Blue Ridge ParkwayBy Kindle CustomerHaving grown up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I purchased this book hopping that I would learn more about this wonderful Park. The pictures explained a lot to me about the long history of this road and how and why it was constructed. The writing is OK and could have been much better researched as to families who gave up land for this project. They could have also mentioned that many families. mine included. still suffer today over the building of this road and limitations on the use of our land that has been in many families for hundreds of years. Its a fair job and a 2nd edition would be great that covers in depth the history of the Parkway.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nice pictures. but lacking in narrative details.By Mike FI purchased this book before heading for a bike tour of the Blue Ridge Parkway. hoping to get the inside track on the history of the parkway and some of the construction challenges. Dont get me wrong. the pictures (and afterall this is a picture book) are splendid. but the overall narrative. save for the picture captions. seems lacking. There may be other books that tell the true history of the parkway. but I would appreciate many of these details while looking at the pictures presented. In addition. the pictures appear in neither chronological or geographical (from milepost 0 to 469. for example) order. but are rather randomly arranged in each chapter. There are some great old shots (and a few newer ones). I would just appreciate a little more context.
