Appena sente parlare di Caterina; bella e ricca giovane; decide che quella donna diventeragrave; sua moglie; nonostante il carattere rude e scontroso di lei. Alla vicenda principale si sovrappone quella di Bianca; sorella di Caterina; corteggiata da tanti pretendenti che; in una serie di travestimenti; inganni e situazioni esilaranti; tenteranno di conquistarla. Allinterno - come in tutti i volumi Fermento - gli "Indicatori" per consentire al lettore un agevole viaggio dentro il libro.
