NixonHaving spent time on Marthas Vineyard attending one of Alison Shaws workshops I was excited to see her guide to photographing the Vineyard arrive. I was also curious to see how someone synonymous with photography on Marthas Vineyard would share the insights from 25 years of shooting there. Would she hold back favorite sites? No worries there! All the sites that Alison took her workshop to last year are described; with just stunning illustrative photographs rolled in for good measure. There are even the ultra-fine details of how to find some elusive spots such as Lucy Vincents beach.As a guide to the potential shooting locations should be essential reading for everyone heading to the Vineyard with camera in hand. Additionally; the introductory chapters on equipment and dealing with the beach environment are useful for someone who hasnt photographed extensively along the shore. Go to one of Alisons workshops ([...]); youll have a blast. A Master Photographer Tells AllBy Sengi96I spend half the year on the Vineyard and own three of Alison Shaws photographs. During that period of time that I am on the Vineyard;I take a lot of pictures. I own a Canon S90 which is a sophisticated point and shoot. I am tempted to buy a better camera. I was pleased with the first technical portion of the book. Even though I do not own a more expensive camera; I can do many of the things suggested by Ms. Shaw. In the first part of the technical session she describes the series of photographs that she took at a boat yard in Vineyard Haven. I believe one of my Shaw pictures was part of that series. I once asked Ms. Shaw whether she tinkered with the original photograph. Her answer was really NO it is natural light; but she cannot help augmenting a photo on the computer. I wish she had included a brief section on the use of software and a computer to help make a good picture better. There has to be some good tips in that very special head. I urge you to visit her gallery on Oak Bluffs and the Granary Gallery in West Tisbury; Thumbing through the books of available art is an education in itself. Not only are the photographs gorgeous the instructions great for all levels of photographers; but the book also has detailed directions to all the beautiful places Alison Shaw recommends. My husband I actually used this book this fall we took great photos of some places the general public is not allowed in season. We probably would never have found Lucy Vincent Beach had we not had this book! It is one of the most gorgeous beaches on the Vineyard. Alison also shares her photography techniques. Even though my photos will never look like hers;I did pick up a lot of pointers. This is an all around great book. I also love the book because I happen to have a copy of the photo on the cover!
