Nicknamed "The Richest Hill on Earth;" Butte was once among the worlds largest copper producers and a thriving industrial metropolis in the undeveloped west. Working with the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives and the World Museum of Mining; authors and Butte residents Matt Vincent and Chad Okrusch show here how the gritty town has weathered many booms and busts; celebrating its rich history while also dealing with the environmental legacies of its industrial age.

While not over the top in terms of being a scholarly work. he does capture the history and essence of Carbondale through his narrative as well as photographically. The book is nicely laid out and the photos and illustrations crisp. The book is an enjoyable and easy read. The photos awesome and the insights into life in Carbondale fascinating. As a native of NEPA. I rarely ventured into Carbondale as a youth or young adult. For that I have some regrets. In its heyday. it must have been an interesting community. I do recall taking a date from Chapman Lake to see see Mary Poppins at the Irving Theater in the early sixties! Thanks for the memories!! !Great job James! Please keep writing about other up-the-line communities!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive collection of historical images with brief historical descriptions. ...By Vernon MountComprehensive collection of historical images with brief historical descriptions. Lacking were maps of the city. a substantial portion of which was torn down. excavated and rebuild in the past 50 years. Also missing are maps of the tracks of the original gravity railroad. the 3 railroads that once served the city. as well as the locations of the mines and coal breakers. Someone not familiar with the city could have problems with orienting the images and locating the historic sites.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy EJSEnjoyable
