Each chapter covers one home. all of which are private homes. with the exception of one museum house. One home is an old warehouse renovated in a contemporary style. The rest are traditional styles--some are laid back and cozy; some are very formal and historically correct. Each chapter includes many lavish photographs. a history of the house. and a bit about the current owners. I would have loved to see the floorplans of these houses. but you cant have everything. Now to review this as a Kindle book. First of all. the price difference between the ebook and the hardcover makes this a real deal for Kindle owners. I have a Kindle Touch and the Kindle app on my Ipad. I read it on my Ipad. but I looked through it on my Kindle for the purpose of writing this review. My recommendation is that you only buy this as an ebook if you have an Ipad. or another device that allows you to zoom in on the pictures. My Kindle Touch just did not do justice to the pictures. and I could not see the details. With my Ipad. I could do the "stretch" move on the pictures. so that I could focus in on every little detail. and really study the homes and the décor. So. I recommend it only to those who have a device that has the ability to display photos well.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful book features houses rarely seenBy Jon L AlbeeNo book. no mere combination of words and photographs. can do justice to the Southern gem we call Charleston. Despite this. many books try. What makes this book worth your time (and money) is the fact that the houses featured in it. for the most part. are private residences that you cant tour. So it makes sense that the book focusses somewhat on the interiors. because these are the artistic elements of the houses that are most private. Lovely full-page photographs illustrate both exterior and interior of each of 15 featured houses from the Colonial. Federal and Greek Revival periods. The photographs are good. as they should be for a book of this type. The author has an engaging writing style and the text is also quite good. It reveals the historic and cultural contexts of the houses. their owners. and their contents. Architectural historians take note: The author intends. in her own words. for this book to be used as an informal guide. It is not a book written as an academic study. and will have limited use as a research tool. As a casual browse. its enjoyable. As a reference work. there are much better books.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
