We all know the story of Guy Fawkes who wanted to blow up parliament. What did he wish to gain; the very people who were going to replace James were present? How did he think he would get away with it? It does not make sense unless it was a story. Now; finally; you can read about the real plot; the plot to destroy the Catholic nobility hatched by Robert Cecil; Earl of Salisbury. Behind the scenes; he manipulated the cast in his play. Catesby; the supposed ringleader; had embraced Anglicanism; bringing his children up in the Anglican faith; yet he is portrayed as the zealous leader of the plot. Guy Fawkes was simply a night-watchman guarding barrels. James I feared being stabbed or blown up; Cecil ran an efficient spy network; and he was able to play on Jamess fears. Read the true story that relies on facts. For far too long we have meekly accepted the propaganda of the age and ignored the flimsiness of those contrived coincidences that gave Cecils outrageous plot credence. Now; you can read the truth

I actually had an emotional experience from a book about three teams of competitive cheerleaders. Before this book. Id rarely taken the time to think about cheerleading competitive or otherwise. I actually just picked up this book because I heard the new CW show Hellcats is based at least somewhat on this book. But it blew me away. I read it in like two or three days. Torgovnick takes the reader on a journey following the Memphis All Girl. Stephen F. Austin Co-ed. and Southern squads through their successes. failures. and near misses. Something happened to me throughout this book. I found myself lost in the pages hoping that Southern would miraculously find more people for their squad. or that Sierra would recover from her concussion and skull fracture (I stopped for several hours at that point.) I even found myself wanting SFA to take home the cheerleading title because Torgovnick made me as the reader feel emotionally invested in these people. That is the mark of an excellent writer and journalist. One had critiqued that she let herself become part of the book at some points. which is bad for journalism. To feel is to be human and after hanging out with these girls. I dont know how anyone would not find themselves becoming emotionally invested in these teams. even on the small level Torgovnick does. There is also something sad about "Cheer" from the stories of Mary and Ashley who where doing cocaine and anorexic respectively because they werent thin enough to be cheerleaders. Even the successful cheerleaders seem to speak of cheerleading as a sickness or addiction at some points like towards the end of one the sections on Memphis. I believe one of the girls passes a twelve year old in full cheerleading uniform and says something like "Sometimes. I just want to walk over to her and tell her to get out while she still can." This certainly isnt the picture of the smiling never ending ball of pep that I always had running through my head...0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A cheer-tastic read!By Raaayyychul37After being an avid fan of Hellcats and a cheerleader myself. this book was top of my holiday reading list and it most certainly did not disappoint! The non-fiction content being narrated in a fictional manner was a really interesting style I had never seen before that I thoroughly enjoyed. The stories of the three featured cheerleading squads were spread out evenly throughout the story to keep you on your toes. and I think the different chapters were well chosen. I especially liked the use of a quote from one of the characters being used to introduce each new section of the story. Add to this the wide array of images to put faces to names and the cheerleading glossary at the end. and this book was quite simply perfect! I would recommend it to absolutely anybody interested in cheerleading!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cheer the only true book about cheerleaders and what they go throughBy jazz1187This is an amazing book. I would suggest it to anyone who loves cheerleading. It provides an in depth look into the world of cheerleading. Not about fitness or skills. it is a story about the year of cheerleading. Following three teams through their year of competing and prepping for competition. I only wish there were more books out there like this one! Looking forward to another book by Kate. I would love for her to follow a few new teams. Possibly U of O or Hawaii?
