There are layouts; splash pages and sketches. The paintings done on Bristol board looks really great with all the texture and paint. I thought there was a certain manga element to the Matt Wagners style in some of the character portraits and backgrounds.The book doesnt just feature art from Matt Wagner but other artists as well. We get to see interesting stuff like Ashley Woods ink splatter style as well as Clint Langleys nitty gritty muscle bulging Grendel.Right at the end is a guest gallery with artists like Frank Miller; Darwyn Cooke; Paul Pope among others providing their own style of Grendel. Same character; different sensibilities.There are plenty to reminisce in this nice tribute; but recommended more for Grendel fans.(More pictures are available on my blog. Ive been fortunate enough to follow right along with the majority of Matt Wagners work since he began in the industry. As he created; I lovingly obtained. I missed out on Grendel initially; but followed it when Mage added Grendel as a back-up (a shame to refer to it as that really). This book encompasses so many varied takes on such an iconic figure. Reading savoring each page brought back memories of the stories; as I recalled them when I first read them (to the point I got all of my Grendel comics out to puruse again). Incredible production; insight care was put into this book. Even if you never have had the opportunity to enjoy such a creation during its tenured history; this book could stand alone without fail create the excitement to obtain any and all Grendel material available. Ive been fortunate enough to meet Mr. Wagner if I ever have the opportunity again; this book is a definite template to request his signature.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The book does a good job of tracing the history of Grendel while partnering it with some great artwork. If youre a fan; this is a great book to add to your library. If youre curious about Grendel; this is a great place to start; but be sure to pick up "Devil by the Deed too."
