At one time; New York State had over 300 covered bridges; but over the years; floods; fires; and modernization have claimed all but 32 of them. Both the Hyde Hall Covered Bridge and the Old Blenheim Bridge are proud record holders. Located in Glimmerglass State Park; the Hyde Hall Covered Bridge is the oldest existing covered bridge in the United States. The Old Blenheim Bridge was the longest single-span covered bridge in the world until it was washed away by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 when the Schoharie Creek flooded. Today; Oxford; New York; is home to the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center; which was specifically designed for covered bridge researchers--the first-ever center of its kind.

Essential guide for my step up to digital SLR photographyBy Free Range ClickinLast week I bought my first digital SLR - the Nikon D40x 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens. I decided to step into the world of digital SLRs after years of experience with different (and very good) compact or "point and shoot" digital cameras. My current compact digicam is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3K 7.2MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black) - which I took to Peru; and with which I took some wonderful photos. As good as they were; I wanted to try for even better pictures; and happily bought my Nikon D40x SLR.But after I opened the boxes and got my pristine new D40x ready to use; I suddenly felt lost and overwhelmed. Yes; theres an "auto" setting; but if thats all I use; I figure I might as well not have spent all the money to get into the digital SLR world. The owners manual is; Im sure; complete and accurate; but I found it difficult. It tells me the name of a button and something of how to use it; but I dont have the background to know what most of that means in terms of taking a photo.Fortunately; I ordered this book from - and its saved the day. Im still working my way through it; but I know its a keeper - and its going along whenever possible; for reference on the spot when Im taking photos.Im no dummy; nor a total novice at digital photography. But Im not a professional photog; nor a "camera geek" familiar with a lot of the technical terms and concepts. The author strikes just the right note for me with the explanations in this book. At last - Im starting to understand histograms; and feel more assured when changing ISO settings. Im also learning the uses of all those dials and buttons on my new D40x.Reading this book has conquered a vague sense of dread I felt about this new gadget ("what was I thinking buying this complicated expensive camera?"). Instead; Im looking forward to using my D40x and learning more as I go.I dont know if it exactly replaces the owners manual supplied by Nikon; but I encourage anyone whos feeling baffled by that manual to get their hands on this book. Its made all the difference to me between puzzlement and comprehension.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 10 years of searching for this Field Guide. Its absolutely the best; most important accessory to the D40.By TuffyI have been looking for this manual FOREVER! I received my NEW D40 for Christmas in 2006 when my granddaughter was 2 years old. I had a coolpix; the recovery was so slow. My granddaughter is now 12 yrs and I still have that same D40. I have taken over 100k PLUS pics of just her.Oddly enough; its easier to find lenses than it has been finding this guide. Its never in stock or at the library. I have learned a little about my camera somewhat just by the web and some low level classes.NOW that I FINALLY have it; YEAH!!! Even the first portion..quick start explains items I didnt know. Im so happy that I can now actually use the camera to its true extent. I have always known the camera was smarter than me.I never feel like a poor stepchild using this camera b/c EVERYONE -especially photo people- love this camera. AND they are very impressed that I have one and its still in perfect condition. It has been out of production for so long; but I love mine and love that I can still add lenses. Now; thanks to you; I will not be choosing a lens or shoot mode in my normal trial by error. I have missed shots trying to find the perfect lens; thinking I can always do better.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. PHOTOGRAPHY 101By EASY TRAVELERThis is more than a how to book for the NIKON D40 and D40x!Busch explains basic aspects of photography too. You learn something in the process. You get a "two fer" with this book. Ten stars **********!Go to Ken Rockwell for more info on this neat camera and get this book! The D40 is better than the D40x in several respects. I prefer the D40. 1/500 sec flash sync for starters. Six megapixel sensor [bigger is NOT better here!]Dont even think of getting ANY other digital camera than the NIKON D40!
