City Walks: Chicago: 50 Adventures On Foot

[audiobook] City Walks: Chicago: 50 Adventures On Foot by Christina Henry deTessan in Arts-Photography

Description

This is the story of a Finnish family during World War II; combining a gripping correspondence between the authors parents; who were separated by the war; with the interspersed memories of the author; who was their youngest child. While her father was at the front fighting the Soviets; her mother moved the family around the country; ending up on a farm on the Arctic Circle; trying to keep her daughters safe from Russian bombs. Finland sued for peace with the Soviet Union in 1944; which made them enemies of the Germans; who had a standing army of 200;000 men in Finnish Lapland. War broke out with Germany; and the authors family managed in the nick of time to flee to Sweden. Throughout this historic drama are a tapestry of letters and family stories; along with the touching voice of the little girl Stina; whose observations; reflections; and worries move the reader along to the dramatic conclusion.

Great to have around for hard-to-please guestsBy Dog BlueThis is the perfect thing to have around the house for guests who have already "been there. done that" and are looking for something different. I usually supplement the walking tours with little stops and detours of my own. My one complaint is that the deck is badly in need of updating. Many of the listed neighborhood shops and restaurants have closed or have a new name or location. so just be aware of that.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. New to the City? These are great!By livingthedreamI live in Chicago. My partner and I have a weekly date night. We like for our date nights to be mini adventures for which these cards are perfect! We randomly select a card and go for it! Best of all. these cards make for an affordable yet meaningful date. Chicago has so much history and architecture that its easy for things to be overlooked. These little cards give life to the structures and areas that would otherwise be passed up.Whether you live in Chicago or visit occasionally these cards are simple yet fun. I would highly recommend them for someone new to the city.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic resourceBy Granny PifEverynight. we planned the next days adventures and took just the right cards with us. Cut down on the bulk of large travel books or maps and we didnt miss a thing. As we drove out of the city. we took two of the cards on "neighborhood" sites and drove zig-zaggedly out of Chicago so that we could keep sight-seeing. We were able to see the most delicate copper turret on one house - something we would have missed without these cards. We came home and looked to see what other cities have these cards and plan on buying them as we visit other places. Just a great. great idea!
