Poor photos; missing or inadequate diagrams; and no finished garment measurements make this of limited use.By Jacqueline KiffeI collect crochet books; and I have enough of them that mediocre books are not kept. This book has some annoying features; but what it lacks cost it two stars in this review. The three biggest -- huge; in my opinion -- are that the photos are very poor quality; the diagrams are nearly nonexistent; and finished garment measurements are missing. Without those; reproducing these items would be extremely difficult. On the 10" Fire tablet; the pictures are tiny; enlarge them; and they are blurry. They are poorly lit and unprofessional. That is; the photos are taken as if the idea were to get a good picture of the person; not the item. In most cases; there is only one shot; and most of the item is obscured. Add dark yarn; and it just morphs into a dark blob. Detail is utterly lost in most cases. And it is those nice details that are the reason we crochet to begin with. I realized yesterday that one fingertip towel cost me $15 plus tax to crochet; and I could have purchased one for far less. It was the marriage of a beautifully textured stitch pattern with the lace edging; which were a pleasure to create; that motivated me. I was not paying to own it; but for the pleasure of creating it.Second; there are neither piece diagrams nor stitch diagrams. The very few drawings are small; unclear; and partial. Even those few dont always add anything; such as the diagram of the side of a rectangular bag. But sweaters and shrugs? Sorry; no diagrams there.Third; there are no finished measurements for garments. They mention; at the very beginning of the book; what bust sizes correspond to the pattern sizes; but I need to know how a garment fits; oversized or snug; and how it fits all parts of the body. For example; I am particular about how things fit in both the upper arms and the arm length. Simple diagrams would have helped immensely. There were other issues; such as the tired repeats of things everyone has heard about the right way to live your life and the author info (which should be about credentials in the subject matter; not where you rank on homey virtues); but they did not enter into my ranking system. Instead; I considered only two factors; namely; how interesting/useful the projects were and whether the information presented would allow you to make said projects. After all; if the information is unclear; incorrect; or missing; it does not matter if the projects are interesting or not. The cover sweater is by far the most attractive item; and verbal stitch instructions are all you have. If she added the diagrams for each piece with measurements; I would buy it in a heartbeat as a freestanding pattern. (Even free patterns come with those.)1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice pattern book; good variety of projects.By Cindy RoyBought used; its in good shape; it has a lot more in it then I thought it would; a few great sweater patterns; and other patterns like scarfs; hats; shurgs; belts an jewelry patterns too. These are very Beautiful projects!Just be sure to use the right type of yarn ladies..You should not use regular yarn on everything especially clothing; clothing should be made thinner yarns and threads;; mostly of the non-fuzzy Cotton type yarns..On the crochet sites on Facebook I see way to many ladies making summer tops out of worsted weight yarns... That yarn is way to hot and heavy for summer items..Please try Cotton Fair by Premier size 2 with a G or 4mm hook or Bernats Cotton-ish size 2..These are great yarns for those of you who find working with the threads to be difficult because there so thin..Happy Creating everyone.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Best Crochet Technique Around!By Kathleen A. BanfieldAbsolutley the most innovative and exciting crochet book Ive seen in a long time! Actually; I already had a copy of this book; I purchased this one for my crochet buddy; Debbie; so we can do our own "CALs" (crochet-alongs) I made the Tangerine Top back in 2008; and still get compliments when I wear it. MaryJanes "graduated stitch" technique creates garments that fit as well; if not BETTER; than hand-knitted ones. There is little to no shaping; all the decreases and increases are done by changing the stitch. For example; the taller dcs and tcs make for a longer stitch; which is better suited for the bottom of a garment. Short stitches; like sc and hdcs are used at the bust-line. Its FUN and a different; exciting way to construct clothes.Thetops seem to mold to my body; and dont even appear hand-made.MaryJane is so clever! In the past; Judith Copeland was famous for sideways construction; or modular crochet (as she called it at the time) Now; MaryJane Perry has taken that to a new level--and I would recommend this book for ALL levels from beginners to advanced "hookers."
