Based on a discussion of conflicts in the urbanization process; this book provides theoretical and practical solutions for the preservation and development of urban localities. On the basis of informative case studies; it reveals the similarities and unique aspects of urbanization in Germany and China. The process of urban growth and the future trend of locality and urbanization are also examined. The book gathers contributions from architects; landscape designers; environmental engineers; urban planners and geographers; who analyze urban issues from their individual perspectives and provide methods for preserving and developing urban localities. As such; it expresses responses to urban development trends against the backdrop of sustainability in the 21st century.

Ive read it twice - once quickly for pure enjoyment. the second time slowly to make sure I learned what I could. I marvel at two things in particular: first. the amount of difficult engineering involved in creating. transporting. raising. and in some cases removing the obelisks. and secondly. why I had never really considered this before reading the book. Dr. Brier tells a wonderful tale. While living in London I loved going to the Embankment and seeing the obelisk there and wondered about the real story of its being lost in the Bay of Biscay. Now I know. Thanks Bob.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My Book Club thoroughly enjoyed the bookBy Caballero de la CepaMy Book Club thoroughly enjoyed the book. We are mostly engineers (3) geologists (1) manufacturing businessmen (2) military pilots (3) with engineering back grounds. That dolerite (basalt). a dense volcanic rock. was the hardest known substance at that time was used to chip out the "needles" and brute force to move them to the Nile. then alternately float- sink - refloat the barges to transport the massive granite needles is beyond comprehension to our modern minds Butt the author. Bob Brier. showed conclusive evidence with photo of how it was done. Good job. I recently saw the obelisk in Plaz du Concorde in Paris and was overwhelmed by the magnitude of the Obelisk. Thats to Bob Briers careful and complete research we are able to appreciate what mankind was able to do 5000 years ago.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
