Review
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. excellent as a single book on MahlerBy Mr John HaueisenActually; I bought this book chiefly because I would buy nearly any book that offers more information on my favorite composer; Gustav Mahler. This book offers some surprises: lots of illustrations AND a very good telling of Mahlers life story. The photographs include pictures of nearly all of Mahlers homes and composing cottages; many cartoons that newspapers ran about Mahler; and photos of the places and people with whom Mahler worked. It also has an excellent index for checking out specific points. Two other items of special interest are:Moritz von Schwinds engraving of "The Huntsmans Funeral;" which was the inspiration for the funeral march in Mahlers first symphony.Otto Boehlers silhouettes of Mahler conducting in Vienna--this gives us an idea of what Mahlers conducting may have looked like to the musicians and the audiences of that time.If I had to recommend a single book on Mahler; it would be this one.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good overview; profusely illustrated.By allandaleIve gone on periodic Mahler kicks since high school 50 years ago. This last time I went whole hog and read Alma Mahlers untrustworthy diaries; letters; a very good short biography (by Jonathan Carr) and this profusely illustrated book which is a pleasure even in the Kindle edition I bought. It includes most if not all of the photos existing of Mahler and Alma; his composing huts; and more; while providing a very good short biography that includes discussions of his music. Despite wide-reading about Mahler and decades of listening to his music; I found little to disagree with in the books overviews of the work.Another good book is "Mahler and His Music;" also profusely illustrated. My favorite book on Mahler; though; is the non-technical but delightful "The Mahler Symphonies; an Owners Manual." by David Hurwitz.
