Composed after a visit to Cuba in 1861 by Spanish composer Sebastian Yradier (Sebastian Iradier Salaverri); the influence of Cuban habanera gives the song its distinctive rhythm. Particularly in Mexico the song quickly became popular and in many places; including Afghanistan; Hawaii; the Philippines; Germany; Romania; Zanzibar; and Goa it gained status of a folk song.
