Valuable LocationBy JorgeVallejo; located on the far northeastern part of San Pablo Bay directly connected to San Francisco Bay is largely protected from the Bays fog and wind. With possible invasion from the sea being unlikely; Mare Island; just off Vallejos shoreline was the first United States Naval Base on the Pacific Ocean; opened in 1854. Vallejo offers a prime location as a headquarters for visits to San Francisco; the Bay Area as a whole; Napa Valley; Oakland and Berkeley. The high speed San Francisco Bay Ferry provides an easy and fast crossing to San Francisco. Access to BART; Amtrak and Caltrain is available in nearby Richmond. I-80 and the other connecting Interstates and Highways offer convenient ease of movement to many scattered points of interest. R/V Parks; motels; restaurants; a huge shopping center and most any service needed is available. Vallejos own history is largely shaped by its location; enabling quick travel to the larger area; but; offering withdrawal to a more comfortable slower paced life style when desired.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. So engrossingBy R. B. E.I lived in Vallejo for almost four years and in that time I frequently saw many hundreds of homes and buildings that obviously dated back to the 1800s but there seemed to be a dearth of information regarding them. Now that I live on the east coast I still wonder about those old places and sought to learn more about my one-time home. Enter this book. As with all their other titles; this one compiles photos from the very beginning and traces the towns steps from the Frontier Days; through the boom times of WWII at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and later into the 20th Century. I learned much and am grateful that this book exists. Its a great addition to any Vallejoans library and should be required reading in the schools so the children learn from the past and maybe help preserve their hometown for future generations.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A good book; but incomplete.By Old Man WalkingAn impressive work that I enjoyed; but it is incomplete in one area. It goes into great detail about every obscure school and learning facility in the history of Vallejo except for Franklin Junior High School. During the forties; Franklin was one of two junior highs in the city (the other was Vallejo JHS) and Franklin is still in operation to this day while most of the others are not. Why was Franklin left out?Other than that; I learned a great deal about the history of the town that I spent my teen years in. A worthwhile read.
