Verbal brilliance; urbane sophistication and sexual conquest are themeasures of success for the fashionable set who watched themselvesbeing represented on the Restoration stage. Yet idealisation andsatire; as this edition of Ethereges masterpiece shows; are flip sidesof the same coin; and the play betrays deep anxieties about ridiculeand social failure. Any London beau would emulate Dorimant; theunconscionable rake who loves em and leaves em; but he would alsosecretly fear that he in fact resembled Sir Fopling Flutter; the modelof all Restoration fops; in his vanity and affectation. The women fareno better; being offered for identification Dorimants discardedmistress Loveit; scheming for revenge; or the beautiful but hard-headedHarriet; who dares Dorimant to woo her in the country; for I know allbeyond Hyde Park is a desert to you and that no gallantry can draw youfarther.

Still packs a punchBy SydSavvyExcellent play revealing our society and howWe face and dont face; champion and ridicule bigotry. Its less a question of science and more a question of the right to think for yourself; to make up your own mind.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Deliciously enjoyable performances from beginning to endBy KDThis is a good clear transfer in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. Depending on your TV set; you might be able to expand your picture to fill the screen at 1.85:1; which is also perfectly watchable due to the way the picture was composed when it was photographed. This film used to be shown on NBCs "Saturday Night At The Movies" now and then. Amazingly; it was less controversial in 1960 than it is today! For classic movie buffs; you will see many first-class actors doing outstanding performances. Remember; this is a fictionalized version of the Scopes trial -- but much of the courtroom dialogue was taken from court transcripts. This is a must-see!
