Description

Studies the influence of the plastic arts on the major writers of Latin American modernism.Painting Modernism demonstrates the influence of painting and sculpture on the work of the major writers of Latin American modernism. Through his analysis; Ivan A. Schulman; a foundational figure in the field; offers a concise and new interpretation of works by Joseacute; Asuncioacute;n Silva; Juliaacute;n del Casal; Rubeacute;n Dariacute;o; Joseacute; Juan Tablada; and Joseacute; Martiacute;. Traditional critical discourse on modernism has emphasized the nature of this movement in terms of its self-referentiality; fragmentation; elitist/escapist concepts; and subjective notions of cultural and aesthetic authenticity. Schulman breaks from this approach and examines these works as products of subjectively generated social/artistic practices that are inseparable from socioeconomic transformations and the chaotic cultural crises of the modern world.ldquo;hellip;[a] highly readable book hellip; this volume is a valuable and timely contribution to several disciplines; a work that has far-reaching implications and the potential to stimulate further research into a fascinating epoch of literary history.rdquo; mdash; HispaniaIvan A. Schulman is Professor Emeritus of Spanish and Comparative Literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the author and editor of many Spanish-language books on modernism.

A great read if you have any interest in Rutherford; NJ or NJ historyBy SnooshBy way of disclosure; I know the author of this book; but Ill try to be objective. To many; Rutherford; New Jersey is the home of the Meadowlands sports complex and some big teams; or a suburb of New York City; and thats it. But I grew up there; and found this book to have a lot of great information; fascinating insights; and great photos to flesh out the history from long ago up to when I lived there. There are some parts of the book that just provide more and more info; but most of the time it is written in an interesting fashion and makes many things come alive; and it brought back many; many memories from times past. The photos alone are worth the price. It is well organized; handsome; and if you have any interest in Rutherford; or early New Jersey; its well worth it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
