Description

JankowskiId often wondered why one of my favorite bands of all time suddenly cracked and broke (up). Often pining for them to come across one anothers paths and remember the good old times and decide any petty sentiments were just that; petty. But always wondering exactly WHAT was it that occurred for them to disappear at such a (critically) critical; pinnacle point in their careers. My friend directing me to this book and I am currently half through. From page one it all becomes clear. This is an easy read and yet one that is substantive causing any Galaxie 500 fan to eagerly continue the reading trek. Im halfway through and will pick it up even at 2am when I should be turning out the light to read "just one chapter." Even though I havent finished the book I am still think its easily worthy of the 5-star rating. This book is humorous yet at times deeply personal without going too deep. Dean has the knack of knocking out 2 paragraphs to share a moving episode or thought process; whereas others could have gone of for 2 or 22 pages. What I particularly like is his refreshing wit and insights. This isnt just him plodding along with this happened; then that happened; then we hated each other; then I was in another band; please buy my records. Not at all. If fact; he talks about how the record industry traps performers within the contracts; essentially railing against the antiquated means of getting onces music out.(Sidebar) Obviously we have many self produced; self marketed performers today; i.e. Radiohead; Prince; Siouxsie; and Throwing Muses all of whom have taken some level of control in their music making it to the fans without having to walk through the record companys gift shop to get to that point. If fact as many of us know there are "unknown" bands who have done their "own thing" in this manner and end up having rather large followings without radio play. One band is Explosions in the Sky. An instrumental band with merely a handful of releases ends up selling out 6;000 seats at Radio City Music Hall in New York City; where a couple years before theyd played the usual smaller venues of 1;000 general admission tickets. And yet they are virtually unknown to most.OK; moving on. Im loving the book. I dont often read singer/band (auto)biographies but Im glad I did read this one. Oddly; my next reading will be another: Autobiography by Morrissey. Ill get back to you on that one once Im done. For Deans book Id say two thumbs up.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Symphonic Vaseline!By p-bodyIf youre a Luna fan; youll love this book! Funny and insightful journey through the bands history. It also gives an insiders view into being in a band and the mechanics of recording; touring; recording; touring; etc. Deans writing style starts out a little flat; but picks up after the 2nd chapter and gets progressively better as the book progresses. This is also a story of personal growth as he matures; his marriage dissolves; and he hits a moment of heartfelt self-realization.The book ends on a sad note as Luna plays their final show or is it?...Luna has recently reunited in 2015...woohoo! Time for a new book; Deaner!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great read by one of my favorite musiciansBy CustomerA great read by one of my favorite musicians. I was nervous about reading it as I did not wish to have it muddy my idealistic view of one my favorite bands; Luna; but it was really enjoyable. It is a shame Dean hates Providence so much as that is where I saw so many great shows of his.
