Contemporary Composers On Contemporary Music

[ePub] Contemporary Composers On Contemporary Music by Elliott Schwartz; Barney Childs; Jim Fox at Arts-Photography

Description

Whatever people think about Kubricks work; most would agree that there is something distinctive; even unique; about the films he made: a coolness; an intellectual clarity; a critical edginess; and finally an intractable ambiguity. In an attempt to isolate the Kubrick difference; this book treats Kubricks films to a conceptual and formal analysis rather than a biographical and chronological survey. As Kubricks cinema moves between the possibilities of human transcendence dramatized in 2001: A Space Odyssey and the dismal limitations of human nature exhibited in A Clockwork Orange; the filmmakers style "de-realizes" cinematic realism while; paradoxically; achieving an unprecedented frankness of vision and documentary and technical richness. The result is a kind of vertigo: the audience is made aware of both the de-realized and the realized nature of cinema. As opposed to the usual studies providing a summary and commentary of individual films; this will be the first to provide an analysis of the "elements" of Kubricks total cinema.

As a classically trained musician. I fully understand and appreciate everything this book has to offer. Not everything in this collection is spectacularly interesting. but it is a great collection. Probably not something that the average amateur musician will find particularly enthralling. but there may be some who find it particularly interesting.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great insight to composers thoughts and ideas through their own ...By Serge PuchinskyGreat insight to composers thoughts and ideas through their own writing in letters and articles. A great read for anyone who wishes to get inside the heads of some of the greatest composers of all time.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Kindle version full of typosBy L. SproulThis is my first ebook purchase. but I was shocked at the amount of spelling errors in the text. Eric Satle? Really? REALLY?The book itself is fascinating. Nice collection and variety of viewpoints. Always read these accounts with a grain of salt...biased opinions. cultural restrictions. and what have you. But theyre great for getting a sense of these composers as people in their time. their personalities. and what they find important in music.
