This is worth a German lesson or twoBy german redneckBorn and raised in Germany I speak German fluently and I was really glad for this while reading "Der Schimmelreiter". This is available as a Dual language Novella; but while the English translation covers the essence of the Book; it doesnt even come close to cover the nuances of the language."Der Schimmelreiter" is the story about a man obsessed with water and how to contain it. Nowadays we would classify him with having a touch of OCD or possibly even autism; but the book was published in 1888 when those terms were not yet coined. Theodor Storm; one of the most beloved German authors; uses language like a great Painter uses color to tell the story of Hauke Haien; a farmers son that marries "up" and becomes the new Deichgraf. Storm uses strong language to describe Haukes obsession and crafts his words to each character in the story by their importance. This is a fairly short read; but a beautiful one. If you are fairly fluent in German you will enjoy this; otherwise take another lesson or two before you read this - it will be well worth it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Es lohnt Storm zu lesen!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. My German is not good enough to fully appreciate the lyrical quality of this short novel; which is a fine literary piece as well as a highly engaging story of a troubled soul. It is a "frame" novel with a couple of layers. The main; inner story takes the protagonist from childhood through maturity and to the end of his life. While it is a ghost story; it is more the tale of a character haunted by aspects of his situation and his own character.
