OrvettiThese three early works by Guirgis; which were all first directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman; contain much of what has made Guirgis a leading playwright of his time: realistic characters and heightened language in ensemble pieces."Our Lady of 121st Street" is my favorite of the three. It takes place in the days around the funeral of a hard-edged nun who evoked great passions -- positive and negative -- in the young people she taught; now adults coping with various failings. "Jesus Hopped the A Train" introduces two men in the New York prison system -- one a "superstar" serial killer whose newfound religion helps him evade responsibility for his actions; and the other a man who assaulted a cult leader con man who stole his brothers mind and soul.I found "In Arabia; Wed All Be Kings"; which explores the relationships among the denizens of a low-end bar; less interesting -- the characters were all balls of rage or despair; and I felt their struggles did not lead to a satisfying conclusion.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. early work by a master playwrightBy Frank L. Greenagel IIMr. Guirgis is probably my favorite living playwright. He recently won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Drama for "Between Riverside and Crazy." His other masterpiece is "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot;" which I cant recommend enough. There are earlier plays of his that appeared in NYC between 1999 and 2003. "Our Lady of 121st Street" is set around the wake of Sister Rose; a nun/teach/community leader who inspired incredible devotion and loyalty from those that she cared for. A number of individuals in their 30s and 40s descend upon the wake and interact with each other in a variety of emotional conversations. There are several stellar characters and a bunch of excellent lines. A New Yorker profile from the last year or so stated that Mr. Guirgis has clearly been influenced by the way stand up comics talk and tell stories - I think that is an excellent point. He also has a very good ear for urban dialogue and his characters speak without becoming caricatures."Jesus Hopped the A Train;" takes place within the NYC criminal justice system; mostly in the Tombs or at Rikers Island. There are thoughtful questions raised about crime; justice; redemption and atonement. There is a speech by a minor character (one of the guards) near the end of the play which is wonderful.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
