Well-written inspirationhellip;Wonderful!By paintpaintA note to Ian Roberts:I just finished reading your book and thought it was one of the most inspiring books on painting that Ive ever read. Books like yours let artists know that their struggles are usually the struggles of all artists. and that there are ways of working through them. I especially liked the references to the spiritual. I do not follow the dogma of a religion. but follow my own personal innate knowledge of the spirit. As I grow older. I come to realize more and more that the creations of man are really mans mind and hand being directed by grace. While you stated that beautifully more than once in this book. you also stated the obvious more than once: grace cannot work through the artist until the artist puts in the work. Thank you for that reminder. also.Thank you for a wonderful book that I am sure I will read many more times.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ive Got A FriendBy bjbjorkIve got a friend who shares and gives me joy. comfort. inspiration. and the wisdom to make ME think and create. This is something that is difficult to find in the creative world of art without causing controversy and mixed feelings. My friend is a BOOK!!!! Its written by a serious. caring. and inspirational teacher. Mr. Ian Roberts. the book:"Creative Authenticity" Artists are usually solitary people and need a friend that doesnt argue or give negative vibes. I read this book. underline. highlight.dog-ear. book marks. and can read it for a short or long a time as I happen to have. I now get to my appointments earlier just so I can read a few pages. NO ONE. has ALL the answers ( YOU have to do something too!!!) but this book sure helps and gets me back to the studio ready to go. GET IT. you wont regret it!! Ive had this book for many years now. Im just a little slow in submitting a review and dont take it lightly! I look forward to an audio book version so I can walk and listen and get 2 for 1. much needed excercise and walking with a friend! Its sad that one of the reviewers. Mr. Obregon. gave it just two stars. but I dont think hed be happy with a FREE lunch either! I highly recommend this book!!!Mr. BJ Bjork. artist and student (51 yrs). teacher. and TV Host.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Thoughtful and thought provokingBy M. M. WalterIan Roberts lays out a constructive thesis on being authentic and personal in your art. at whatever level of expertise or point of career building your might be. Roberts is a painter and so most of his thinking is informed by that experience. but his ideas are easily translated in any artistic medium. Along with many other valuable points he contrasts art and art making with the rather artificial (and self-aggrandizing) practice of art critics. suggesting that any misconception about "starving" artists and "crazy" artists is more a product of their myth making and not of true practicing artists. Ive always suspected that. but I appreciated his candor. I found his thought process very helpful.
