The information is very well presented and generally thorough (with some exceptions) in dealing with the topic of scales at hand; however beginners may find it heavy going and lose interest very quickly. Not really what a new player would like. Also it assume you understand some music theory; as it does not even show how a major scale is derived (W.W.H.W.W.W.H); or how they relate to each other. Major/Minor relative scales or how we go from C major to G major and why. It also assume prior music theory knowledge. So therein lies the problem.So why the 5 stars? As a seasoned guitar player; I was looking for something a little more comprehensive to learn something new (not necessarily theory)... tried many of the newer modern books (this book was first published in 1979); but felt that they were a little too simplistic (which is good for beginners; not so much for veterans) and therefore not challenging or in depth enough. This book solved some issues of fingerings; resolved some position playing criteria and I was able to apply them to any scale or mode. It helped clarify scales and solidify my playing technique.If you take it slowly; as Leigh Powers suggests; in the "how to practice" section; you will be rewarded with a deeper understanding of scales and their application in the practical sense.A very good reference book indeed... hence the 5 stars!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent reference book!By Jeff SmithThe previous review was a bit harsh on this book: I had this book in high school when I started playing guitar; and regardless of the print quality; Mr. Powers provides exactly what is needed: musical notation for each scale; the theory behind them; and their placement on the guitar fretboard. Of course; there are those who will find this manner of reading frustrating; however if you see the notes in this manner; it will become easier to grasp the theory. I had lost this book in a move (as the first writer had as well); and mourned its loss; as it is out of print. I debated paying exorbitant prices to obtain a new copy; and was pleased to find one here. Please do not buy a guitar scale book hoping to find "the Holy Grail" that will teach you how to solo like the greats: that takes work and application; as with any skill.
