So often American theater gets depicted as starting with Eugene ONeill; and that just isnt true; Bials book fills a gaping lacuna with as it describes attempts (both sincere and not) to marry melodrama and religion. Especially exciting is the chapter that investigates the heyday of Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell; but getting to the 70s is also an absorbing journey.
