Description

Offering a fresh approach to ancient Greek architecture; Shaping Ceremony focuses on the overlooked subject of monumental steps. Written in a clear and readable style; the book presents three complementary ways of studying steps: examining how the human body works on steps; theoretical perspectives on the relationship between architecture and human behavior; and the socio-political effects of steps presence. Although broad steps are usually associated with emperors and political dominance; Mary B. Hollinshead argues that earlier; in Greek sanctuaries; they expressed and reinforced communal authority. From this alternate perspective; she expands the traditional intellectual framework for studying Greek architecture. The heart of the study is a close reading of thirty-eight sites with monumental steps from the sixth through second centuries B.C. Organized by century; the book tracks the development of built pathways and grandstands for crowds of worshippers as evidence of the Greeks increasing awareness of the power of architecture to shape behavior and concentrate social energy. With photographs and illustrations of plans; Shaping Ceremony offers a clear account of how Greeks adaptation of terrain for human use promoted social cohesion and integrated architectural compositions.

For the homeownerBy CustomerI purchased a farm recently; and animal housing is high on my list as I move toward acquiring goats; alpacas; and guard llamas. I already had one book on animal housing and was interested to see if this book had a substantially different take. Based on the cover picture and the mention of livestock in the product description; I fully expected a hobby farmers book; but this book is meant for the homeowner. There are a few plans for larger animals; but this book focuses on smaller designs like housing for pet snakes or your one dog. It is meant for pet people; not farmers and ranchers. Both the construction designs and the scale of animals were smaller than where I am heading. If you are a pet person with limited construction skills who wants to work with wood; this book might be excellent for you. If you have an acre or two and are considering a farm animal or two; you will get some ideas. If you are looking for housing more than 1-2 animals of any kind or using different materials in your projects based on custom circumstances; you need a resource with more industrial strength.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Building Pets Homes They DeserveBy Dana BarnettFor some strange reason I have always enjoyed assembling things; such as furniture and jewelry. Im not very good at it; but its fun and relaxing. Lately; I have been considering building a house for my cats that live part-time on my screened-in porch. After shopping around for books on the subject; I found Randy LaTour and Sarah Ann Beckmans book 101 Different Ways to Build Homes and Pens for Your Animals: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide.LaTour and Beckmans book offers practical; easy-to-follow; and well-illustrated instructions for building structures for cats and other animals such as goats; chickens; horses; dogs; fish; and turtles. To my delight; photographs of animals are scattered throughout the book as well. The authors provide solid information that readers; no matter their experience; require to construct a pen or home for their animal friends. Moreover; the authors discuss animals needs and explain why certain structures have to be constructed in certain ways to meet these animals needs.I am on my way to creating a home for my beloved cats Chubwick and Appleton. I also am considering adopting two gerbils; a turtle; and some chickens now that I understand and have blueprints for the homes that they will occupy. My cats have enriched my life. They have made it brighter; kinder; and much more fun. With LaTour and Beckmans help; I can now build my pets the home they deserve. Its the least I can do.
