[audiobook] D.R.U.M.: Discipline; Respect; and Unity Through Music by Jim Solomon at Arts-Photography

Description

A remarkably clear-eyed descent into New Yorks surreal world of modern dance peopled by the obsessed; dispossessed; sexy; suicidal; brutal; broke; and absurd.—Lance Olsen; author of Nietzsches KissesThe award-winning writer Reneacute;e E. DAoust draws from her experiences as a modern dancer in New York during the nineties. Her luminous prose spotlights this passionate; often brutal world. Trained at the prestigious Martha Graham Center; DAoust intertwines accounts of her own and other dancers lives with essays on modern dance history. A dancers body; scarred; strained; and tough; bears witness to the discipline demanded by the art form. Body of a Dancer provides a powerful; acidly comic record of what it is to love; and eventually leave; a life centered on dance."With exquisite description; absolute honesty; and a clear compelling voice; Body of a Dancer offers an unforgettable account of one artistrsquo;s bittersweet journey."—Dinty W. MooreReneacute;e E. DAousts essays have been featured as notable essays in Best American Essays in 2006; 2007; and 2009. Her nonfiction work has been included in the anthology Reading Dance; edited by Robert Gottlieb and nominated for the Pushcart Prize. DAoust is the recipient of an NEA Dance Criticism fellowship and grants from The Puffin Foundation and the Idaho Commission on the Arts.

Respect. and Unity Through Music. There is nothing like making music alone or with a group of people -- its the universal language. I recommend this book to anyone thinking of playing the hand drums.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. D.R.U.M.:Discipline. Respect. Unity Through MusicBy Diane FinnesteadI teach undergraduates how to integrate music from around the world into the core subjects within the elementary curriculum. This book is the resource that captures the spirit of cooperative work and community that only drumming and music making can evoke. I highly recommend it based on the musical success experienced by adult learners and non-musicians alike.13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Buy this book!By Ryan MessengerWhen I started teaching music. my mentor teacher taught me something from this book... I had my first successful lesson with my worst 6th graders ever by using something from this book. Jim put not only engaging drumming activities (that can be simplified or modified very easily) into this book. but he put in some fundamentals and tips as well. I took an orff-schulwerk course from him at the Eastman School of Music. and I believe he must be one of the top educators in the country. If you buy this book. you will use it! Check out his other books as well!
