Great Contemporary Pianists Speak for ThemselvesBy RosecamFor anyone who has ever attempted to play the piano or who has enjoyed listening to a great performer; this is your book. Those interviewed speak about their early years; the compulsion each felt to follow such a demanding career; the teachers who guided them; their attitudes towards performing in concert versus recording. Glenn Gould; for instance; hated the former produced most of his work in recording studios whereas several other performers seemed to revel in public demonstrations of their craft. Some talk of technique; others recall little of their early training other than that it seemed to work. No two pianists had quite the same experiences; some knew from a very early age that this was to be their career while others became seriously committed only later. Some enjoyed the travel; others did not. Some managed to combine career with family; others did not. Each presented a unique sample of a successful career with appetite whetted for more detail of each life.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Books.By EDRWonderful documentation to the point of piano playing and careers. Same goes for the marvelous "The Great Pianists" by Schonberg. Witty; enlightening; entertaining and above all. informative.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good book despite some minor technicalitiesBy kcgThis is a very interesting book and although dated; is still relevant with regards to the world of the professional pianist. Although no two pianists are completely alike; there still are common threads which connect those with the lifestyle of a professional; classical pianist. I would have given the book a five-star review; however; it is full of misspellings including a recurring "conceit" for "concert". Nevertheless; it is a good read.
