Description

Published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedys election asaacute;president of the United States; this book is a revealing and intimateaacute;portraitaacute;of a leader; husband; and father as seen through the lens of Cecil Stoughton; the first official White House photographer. Stoughtons close rapport with the president and first lady gave him extraordinary access to the Oval Office; the Kennedys private quarters and homes; to state dinners; cabinet meetings; diplomatic trips; and family holidays. Drawing on Stoughtons unparalleled body of photographs; most rarely or never before reproduced; and supported by a deeply thoughtful narrative by political historian Richard Reeves;aacute;Portrait of Camelotaacute;is an unprecedented portrayal of the power; politics; and warmly personal aspects of Camelots 1;036 days.

This is the funniest writing I have recently read. The author is the legislative reporter in Harrisburg for the Philadelphia Daily News; a trashy tabloid; IMHO. This author may know his papers readership but this book is good stuff. It actually is quite insightful. As a transplant from the Northwest where the state politics seems to be cleaner and more transparent; I have not understood why PA has the largest full-time legislature in the country; and; per capita; may have more recent politicians in prison than any other state. What goes?? Baers book makes it more understandable.I read it in two sittings -- pretty unusual for me.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pennsylvania corruption on full displayBy Jim in LititzAll Pennsylvanians and others interested in understanding government corruption need to read this book. I lived through a lot of this and still was amazed at the arrogance and depth of public corruption. The book is very well written; pulls no punches and even injects some humor. I will recommend this book to all my PENNSYLVANIA friends2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. COULDNT PUT IT DOWNBy James J. WestI WORKED AS A PROSECUTOR IN THE HARRISBURG AREA FOR MANY YEARS AND I FOUND JOHN BAERS BOOK TO BE INFORMATIVE; ENTERTAINING; AND INSIGHTFUL IN MANY WAYS. I READ IT IN ONE SITTING AND LEARNED THINGS THAT I NEVER KNEW FROM MY THIRTY YEARS OF HANDS ON EXPERIENCE IN HARRISBURG. IF MORE PEOPLE WERE WELL INFORMED ABOUT WHAT REALLY GOES ON IN SOME STATE CAPITOLS DEMOCRACY WOULD BENEFIT AND WE WOULD ELECT BETTER PUBLIC OFFICIALS.
