Description

Its mad that yere here with me. In Cobh. I always felt like I was born on the brink of the world. That I was near death; always. And here I am! Hereafter. This place of slower motion. But whipping energy. Back Home.A woman lies dead in her grave in the Tumbledown cemetery; Cobh; County Cork. Its a recent relocation; only two weeks before she was living in a flat near Croke Park in Dublin; beneath two East European prostitutes who she had begun to be friendly with. From her last resting place; she tells the story of her life: her happy childhood and the mother who loved Cleopatra; being struck by lightning and then missing school for a year; her night shifts in hotels washing and mending laundry; up to her ultimate and untimely demise in a north Dublin flat; all via a series of unlikely encounters and heartbreaking betrayals.Written in Pat Kinevanes signature style; Underneath is a blackly comic; rich and vivid tale of a life lived in secret; a testament to the people who live on the fringes; under the nose of everyday life.Underneath was published to coincide with the plays first production by Fishamble theatre company in December 2014.

Constantin Brancusi has been my "numero uno" favourite Sculptor for decadesBy Wally AsselberghsConstantin Brancusi has been my "numero uno" favourite Sculptor for decades; so my opinion might be a little bit prejudiced in a positive way. Still consider it as one of the best books I ever read; and I am planning to buy a printed copy of it as well; after reading it on my Kindle. What I most liked about it was the descriptions by the author of his youth and life in rural Romania; which so much influenced and inspired his sculptural forms. The book also gives a great description of the life of artists in Paris; at the times when this city was once the cultural center of planet Earth. Although I experienced some passages were a little tedious; giving overwhelming information of dates of birth and death of some people he met; it is still very historically correct and informative. Great biography in regard of quotations from letters to and from the Sculptor. It was amazing to read how many great artists he connected with in Paris. Brancusi had a very inspiring and powerfull influence on my own ceramic sculptural objects. But;for 3 years in a row; I once forbade myself to look at pictures of his work; as I wanted to avoid any kind of influence which could make me copy his forms; without actually intending to do so....Many congrats for Sandra Miller to write this fascinating book; no more to be said.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. (Kindle Version)By CustomerLots of (interesting) words but NO pictures! As the only downloadable book on Brancusi I was hoping for more. Unfortunately the (very short) sample for download does not warn that there are no pictures. How can a book about Brancusi have no pictures?
