The photographs and historical vignettes in this book about Derry. New Hampshire are priceless ...By D. FowlerDerry. New Hampshire. originally known as Nutfield. was founded by sixteen families who had immigrated from Ireland in 1719. As were many towns during those early years. Derry was essential an agricultural community until 1849 "when the railroad came to town." Businesses began to rise up along its tracks and people began to work in shoe factories and later H.P. Hood. The introduction of this book gives a brief history of the town. but the photographs within this book give us a much closer look at the evolution of the town. Many of these "photographs" are RPPCs or real photo postcards.Among the notable people who came from Derry include George "Lefty" Tyler a baseball player for the Boston Braves and Chicago Cubs and astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr. He graduated from Derrys Pinkerton Academy and his youthful. and very endearing smile graces these pages. Among the photographs include lakes and ponds. farms people. institutions. transportation. mills. the Upper and Lower Villages. Broadway. and a mix of social activities. Each photograph or RPPC has a brief paragraph beneath it that shares historical vignettes about the town. Some of the information tells a lot about the town and its historical origins while others were simply legendary. For example. one shows a close-up of Roger Beliveaus "legendary four-yoke egg" in 1939. It was of high interest. but has now floated into obscurity only to be revived in this book. All of the images are in black and white. but the trip through time was priceless and fun. This is the type of book that is fun to browse and learn about New England towns such as Derry without having to read a lengthy history.
