Many of us have grown up musing in front of Hoppers urban paintings; wondering what he was thinking or feeling as he painted these somber scenes. Bonnie Tocher Clause introduces us to a whole new Hopper--one who spent several summers in rural Vermont. Ms Clause traces Hoppers time in Vermont and unravels his history there like a true mystery tale. We also get to see the marvelous landscape paintings he made over those summers in the countryside; many of which weve never seen before. This is a a delightful read----marvelously written and beautifully illustrated. A true delight.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hopper in Vermont shows Hoppers pastoral viewsBy Lesley ValdesBonnie Tocher Clause has taken an artist we thought we knew; the Edward Hopper of melancholy Manhattan and sea-lit Maine; and shown us his pastoral side. Retracing journeys and discoveries through New England that Hopper and his artist-wife Jo; took; the author recreates the people; sites; and most significantly; the paintings inspired by the state beloved for its green optimism. For the first time; Hoppers Vermont landscapes are brought together; many from private collections. Tochers vivid narrative is supported by vigilant research and reportage. The color plates are exceptional.Lesley Valdes;Philadelphia; PA3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Gem !By LHSBOSTONWhether youre an art buff; a fan of Vermont or just someone who enjoys a good story beautifully written; this book is for you. While I was previously acquainted with Edward Hopper and Ive been to Vermont many times and spent much of my life in New England; this book opened up a whole new world for me. Ill never look at a rural Vermont vista or think about Edward Hopper the same way again. A wonderful read.
