It is not a coffee table book; and although the blurb says its also for the general reader I dont think its well suited for that; except to the extent the general reader is welcome to read any textbook. Its design shows its primarily intended to teach art history; and specifically; the history of European and American art and architecture since the Greeks; to high school students preparing to take the A-level AQA History of Art Specifications. Youll find nothing about Asian; African; indigenous; or any other kind of art or architecture from any other time period or location. The text includes pedagogical questions and exercises on almost every page. While many art history texts are arranged chronologically; this one isnt. Instead; its arranged thematically; to show how works of art and architecture may be seen in terms of their formal elements (in the case of a painting; for example; its color; line; scale; composition; etc.) and in terms of how their social and historical contexts form a basis for the works aesthetic and the meaning that may be assigned to it.There are hundreds of illustrations; and the quality of the reproductions is excellent. The authors analysis is to some extent a matter of opinion and preference; there is no one universally accepted interpretation of art. But given that this is a textbook for teenagers; it probably wouldnt be fair to go over the authors assumptions and perspective with a highly critical academic eye. The book presents a thorough overview of its intended subject matter; is thoughful; and informative.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great starter book for those who wonder what the concept of art is all about and why they pay so much for those art pieces!By Courtland J. CarpenterExcellent addition to my collection of coffee table books. I have several on anime; space; food; travel; Hitchhikers Guide; Star Trek; and even one for the game Starcraft 2. This is more legit than some of the others as its an art book with real art! This is not just a book filled with art examples although it does have a number of those; it explains the art thought process. Its produced or sanctioned by the Association of Art Historians (AAH); and you can see the influence from the many; quoted references and acknowledgments. The types of art presented are not just paintings and sculpture; but architecture; buildings and design styles. The book itself may have been designed as a text of sorts for a short course on Art. There are icons like pencils; globes; magnifying glasses; and question marks to highlight special bullet points in the text; and a number of short answer quiz questions throughout the chapters to test your knowledge. I think the goal here is to learn something. I took a course in high school about art appreciation or something; was bored to tears as the guy rambled on about styles of painters; and their "blue period" or whatever. Here we have some interesting bits to read; with full color examples of how art relates to us; and the world in general. The book itself; I would probably like this over the hard cover edition; as its high grade; high quality; think photo type paper with a tough cover; allows the illustrations to stand out; and likely a very low acid so it will last for decades. Tough enough; that while only a third the thickness of my hometown phone book; Id guess youd have more trouble tearing this one in half. Even though the cover has a lot of black in it; and I hadnt washed my hands in a while today; I did not notice any oily fingerprints on it when I was through reading. One of the best designed books for use Ive ever seen; it has a table of contents; and then a toolbox for analysis section in front that describe how to analyze different art genres. At the end of the book is a glossary of new terms; and a full index. Each chapter has references at the end; and many chapters have chapter maps in the beginning. Someone really thought this book out well.Recommended; not just as a coffee table book but to get someone (maybe even yourself) interested in art without cramming it down their throat like they do in schools. Great text to use in a continuing adult education class; and definitely and appetizer to want to learn more about certain facets or art; to explore the topics more fully. Plus; you dont have to explain why Starcraft 2 is your coffee table selection of the week!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant philosophy technique for teaching art history; a very interesting pleasant way to learn gain insight into artBy I Do The Speed LimitSure; I took Art History 101 in college; but Ive never been able to talk about art intelligently or intellectually. I could tell you I liked it; or didnt like it; and tell why I held that opinion--but only superficially. This book has changed that. I now know how to describe a work of art in depth; and to place it in context in history. Reading this book comprehensively will sure make going to the art museum a lot more fun and rewarding.Love the way the book is laid out; the wisdom of the chapter content and the chapter sequence. I like the authors writing style: This is a teacher who knows how to communicate and does so in such a way that it is very interesting. She makes it easy and enjoyable to learn.Working with the companion website; this book offers enough info to speak intelligently about works of art and architecture; or to delve into the subject so deeply that you can feel confident enough to take art history exams. It has a great glossary and index. And; together with the companion website; it has worthwhile and extensive references.Dont be misled into thinking that the multitude of color illustrations and pictures make this book a "coffee table book". No way. While many of its pages are beautiful to look at; this is more a text book. It is used as a text book. But its audience will be much larger than the student population. This book will appeal to anyone interested in art and architecture; anyone who loves to visit art museums and galleries; anyone who loves scrutinizing the work of others; really; anyone wanting to expand their knowledge. It is a soft-covered book; and its pages are light-weight stock.
