Dover (Images of America)

[ebooks] Dover (Images of America) by Matthew S. Lautzenheiser at Arts-Photography

Description

It was the winter of 1851-1852 when the word "gold" echoed throughout the valley. Soon hundreds of gold miners flocked to Table Rock City; later renamed Jacksonville. In short order; families arrived and took out donation land claims and began farming; raising stock; and opening businesses. Many had already emmigrated from Europe; Canada; Ireland; and England. Jacksonville had its own Chinatown that was home to the many Chinese who had traveled far seeking their fortune through gold mining. When the railroad bypassed Jacksonville in 1883 in favor of the new town of Middleford; later renamed Medford; Jacksonvilles fortunes reversed. During the ensuing decades; the towns buildings fell into disrepair. The threat of bulldozers leveling the downtown core in the late 1960s brought out a renewed interest in preservation. Today Jacksonville is a National Historic Landmark District and looks much as it did 150 years ago.

Only thing is I ordered a supposed "new" copy and when it came it had a bent cover corner. and a dirty shoe sole imprint inside the first page. All told it was not in very good condition.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Living in Dover. ignorant of its history. till nowBy Nikephoros PhokasLiving in a town you will never understand its history unless you read something or ask older folks. Dover used to be a more important town than it is today(today it has little setting it apart from neighboring towns) with the Morris Canal formerly passing through it. along with two train lines. being home to one of the finest theaters in the region. the Baker Theatre(64). housing a shopping center that is now gone at the Bassett Highway(15. 128). Alot has changed since then. what once was Billy Fords Pond has been drained in the 1960s and is now a park called Crescent Field(122). the Morris Canal has been drained and filled as it has been superceded by the train and the automobile. This book. consisting of historical pictures compiled together thematically by chapter. with long descriptive captions; ensures these changes and history are more accessible to those interested. *[Note]* The numbers in parenthesis refer to pages in the work I cited.
