Ranger began in the 1870s near a Texas Ranger camp in northeastern Eastland County. It remained a farming community of about 700 people until October 17; 1917; when an oil well on the McCleskey farm; south of town; ushered in one of the best-known oil discoveries. Within months; Rangers population had surged to approximately 30;000; including investors; speculators; wildcatters; oil field workers; curious onlookers; and the usual criminal element attracted to oil boomtowns. Crime became so rampant that the Texas Rangers eventually were called in to intercede. Oil production peaked in 1919 before tapering off. Images of America: Ranger covers a period of about 75 years from the towns beginnings to 1950.

Georgia (a town east of Macon) in the form of annotations of old photographs from the late 19th and earlier 20th century. A distressing number of these buildings. the author records. subsequently burned down or were razed. The book records little history after the Second World War.Id recommend Dublin: The Emerald City to anyone interested in the history of Dublin GA or of small towns in America. or of the use of collections of photographs as historical resources. I downloaded this book while working for a couple of weeks in Dublin.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved it!!By J. SummersSo much history in one sleepy little southern town. Maybe its not so sleepy after all. Scott Thompson did a great job of making old Dublin come back to life.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
