Inspired photography...By EvaPhotographer Mario Dirks landed an amazing opportunity to spend an entire year traveling and photographing some of the most fascinating places in the world and shares his experiences in this beautifully put together photo book. The photography on each page is eye-catching; creative and captures the essence of each destination. Theres a mix of landscapes; people; sights that evoke the mood of its subject.Dirks also shares his shares his thoughts and day to day experiences alongside the photos to give the reader insight into his travels and how he was able to achieve particular photographs. You also get an idea of what each place is like to visit in case youre thinking of traveling there. The shutter speed; aperture and lense is mentioned with the photos as well.As an occasional photographer and someone who loves to travel; I definintely enjoyed this beautiful book to inspire great photography and find places to add to my travel wishlist.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A LIttle ChaoticBy ZoeeagleeyeThere is no question that Mario Dirks has taken some smashing photos. The guy has genuine; sometimes exquisite; talent. But what he didnt have; perhaps; is a good editor. Starting with the cover photo; which looks like a clever commercial for a new car; the book is so crammed with pictures that only a few really stand out. The book itself is hard to handle; wants to close up on you; so worshipful appreciation of some of the pictures is well nigh impossible. I wanted to say; "Slow down; slow down; please." Some pages hold up to 4-5 pictures which does none of them justice. Also; I thought the layout lacking in finesse and structure. Of course; the thrust of the book is geographical; but it seems to me that categories of people; places; things; landscapes might have worked better. But that might entail more than one book! In fact; the layout could have been more presentable; understandable and beautiful had the one book turned into four. This book almost fell into the category of "family vacation photos."Finally; a word about the words. Unfortunately; the prose is pedestrian and often does not give you the details that you want to hear. Sure; Dirks is a photographer and is oriented spatially rather than verbally. He is more familiar with form than sound -- and it shows. For example; he writes; "The first (sightseeing tour) is my first-ever ride on an elephant." So far; so good. He now has the opportunity of using his memory and imagination to rhapsodize about this experience. But all we get is; "Being carried through countryside some ten feet off the ground is an incredible experience." Incredible? At least; thank god; he didnt use that ubiquitous word; "amazing." But the thing is; because there is so little emotion in the writing; there is also very little depth. In short; the book does not do Mario Dirks photos justice; but Im glad we have them anyway.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A travel guide to enjoy and read often.By JerandJanThis book would be a welcome addition to any photographers library. It is one of those rare books that explains how; why; when and where a particular image was created with just enough technical information about the image to satisfy those of us who want to know what focal length; ISO; shutter speed and Fstop was used in each picture. The premise of the book is unique. The author; Mario Dirks; a photographer from Germany; was supplied with all new high end equipment from a camera company and sent on an all-expense paid 50-week tour around the world. That alone would make for an exciting read. It is; however; one of the minor faults of the book. One can certainly travel the entire globe in 50 weeks; but this was an attempt to visit and photograph 75 different cities or locales in that time period. The result is a very good try; but the end result seems to be a bit rushed. He tried to cram too much into the time and space allotted. I would rather read a bit more about his adventures in each city or locale and see more pictures of each that was allowed. For instance; he starts off in Washington; D. C. but there are only 3 pictures from there. There are 5 shots from N.Y. City; six from Rome; six from St. Petersburg; Russia; five from Melbourne; Australia etc.. you get my point. The photographs themselves are excellent; well exposed; sharp; clear and interesting but I wanted to read and see more. For anyone planning a photo expedition; this book is a good example of what to expect and how to do it. The book will make you want to be sure to travel with your camera and the right equipment. I have spent many hours browsing through it and will no doubt spend more time doing so.Disclaimer--- I was sent a free copy of this book by the publisher to review.
