[DOC] Early Music: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) by Thomas Forrest Kelly at Arts-Photography

Description

Reef and Rainforest is a photographic portrayal of marine and terrestrial life in one of the worlds most biodiverse regions ndash; the tropics of north-eastern Australia; together with the South Pacific nations of Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. The photographs were taken over a period of more than 30 years while the author was living in the Solomon Islands and northern Australia. They depict life on the coral reefs; in the rainforests and in adjacent tropical savannahs. From detailed macro studies to sweeping scenics and aerials; the photographs are impressive for both their technical/compositional expertise and the unique insight they provide into the behavioural nuances of marine and terrestrial wildlife. Almost all the wildlife images are of free-living; non-posed subjects; photographed as they were encountered.Along with the stunning photography; the detailed and reflective captions are drawn from the authorrsquo;s experiences. Reef and Rainforest conveys the richness and diversity of the natural world with maximum visual impact.

I was attracted to this book because s sample pages promised insights and discussion about the links between the early music movement and the politics and folk revival of the sixties. In fact. while these links are asserted in a few sentences. they are not developed. Instead. the book is a strange mix - an attempt at a historical overview of the music from medieval times to Bach and Handel on the one hand and a cursory listing of early musics performers on the other. Because the book is part of a series intended by Oxford University Press as "A Very Short Introduction." both topics are handled in very summary manner. Those interested in an historical overview will find this book necessarily brief but interesting. Those wanting discussion of the social aspects of the early music revival will. like me. be disappointed. A better treatment of the revival. though it doesnt go into the social or political overtones. is Harry Haskells "The Early Music Revival: A HIstory." published by Thames and Hudson in 1988.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good overview on performance issuesBy Mitch BaywatchThis is a good overview on the performance issues related to Early Music. including the history of Early music revivals. Readers looking for a composers-and-their-works summary should go elsewhere. Despite chapters with the word "repertories" in the titles. theres practically none of that here. with most significant composers name-checked at most. The Baroque section does go into a bit of detail about how and why it moved away from polyphony. For the most part. however. this is a book about performance.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent resource for amateur players of early musicBy DaisyIt may be a short introduction. but it is packed with clear. interesting information. especially about Renaissance and Baroque music. covering development of the distinctive compositional features and performance styles.
