From the 1870s to the turn of the century; while countless men gambled their fortunes in Death Valleys mines; many bold women capitalized on the boom-and-bust lifestyle and established saloons and brothels. These lively ladies were clever entrepreneurs and fearless adventurers but also mothers; wives and respected members of their communities. Madam Lola Travis was one of the wealthiest single women in Inyo County in the 1870s. Known as Diamond Tooth Lil; Evelyn Hildegard was a poor immigrant girl who became a western legend. Local author and historian Robin Flinchum chronicles the lives of these women and many others who were unafraid to live outside the bounds of polite society and risk everything for a better future in the forbidding Death Valley desert.

BockI have spent lots of time thinking about Mars since a now deceased friend showed me a picture of his pioneering research and said to me. "See that shadow there. Thats my next grant. I predicted it would be there." And we have come so far since then. This beautiful book compares NASA Mars photos with photos Dr. Strom has taken in places he knows well here in the southwestern US. The comparisons are wonderful and bring Mars so much closer to people who like me who are 100% earthbound. The book is functioning as holiday presents for our friends who will love the book for just the same reasons I do. Also. the price is shockingly low for the quality of the art work.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Incredible pictures and illustrations.By D. CovingtonCurious eBook as I cant make bookmarks. Very good pictures and many of the Earth/Mars picture pairs are very thought provoking. The book is divided into four sections; Earth. Fire. Air and Water. There are scattered groupings of explanatory text but its more about what the pictures make you feel than enything. The pair at about location 66 of 183 I swear I can hear water rippling. Amazing pictures and easy to read text. Worth every penny!
