Richard Wagner is remembered as one of the most influential figures in music and theatre; but his place in history has been marked by a considerable amount of controversy. His attitudes towards the Jews and the appropriation of his operas by the Nazis; for example; have helped to construct a historical persona that sits uncomfortably with modern sensibilities. Yet Wagners absolutely central position in the operatic canon continues. This volume serves as a timely reminder of his ongoing musical; cultural; and political impact. Contributions by specialists from such varied fields as musical history; German literature and cultural studies; opera production; and political science consider a range of topics; from trends and problems in the history of stage production to the representations of gender and sexuality. With the inclusion of invaluable and reliably up-to-date biographical data; this collection will be of great interest to scholars; students; and enthusiasts.

I have recently started playing again and am working my way thru my old repertoire. I bought this book to replace the one that is 25 years old. I did have it rebound with spiral binding that makes a huge difference in how it lays and probably how it will age too.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorite books for students!By Jooba the WhaleGreat book with lots of technique. challenging and fun classic pieces. Some are pretty easy. but others will take some work for an intermediate student.- Piano Teacher1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great collectionBy JM ReesIm just learning how to play the piano as an adult and Ive been working on pieces from this book during the last year as Ive been learning. This contains real pieces that are either easy enough for beginners or edited to be accessible. I like it that the pieces are arranged by time period and expect to continue to use this book as I get better at playing. My piano teacher says that she still uses this book to noodle around in.
