Today; the moving image is ubiquitous in global contemporary art. The first book to tell the story of the postwar expanded cinema that inspired this omnipresence; Between the Black Box and the White Cube travels back to the 1950s and 1960s; when the rise of television caused movie theaters to lose their monopoly over the moving image; leading cinema to be installed directly alongside other forms of modern art. Explaining that the postwar expanded cinema was a response to both developments; Andrew V. Uroskie argues that; rather than a formal or technological innovation; the key change for artists involved a displacement of the moving image from the familiarity of the cinematic theater to original spaces and contexts. He shows how newly available; inexpensive film and video technology enabled artists such as Nam June Paik; Robert Whitman; Stan VanDerBeek; Robert Breer; and especially Andy Warhol to become filmmakers. Through their efforts to explore a fresh way of experiencing the moving image; these artists sought to reimagine the nature and possibilities of art in a post-cinematic age and helped to develop a novel space between the ldquo;black boxrdquo; of the movie theater and the ldquo;white cuberdquo; of the art gallery. Packed with over one hundred illustrations; Between the Black Box and the White Cube is a compelling look at a seminal moment in the cultural life of the moving image and its emergence in contemporary art.

My niece loves to read it with me.In the United States; Native Americans are considered to be people whose pre-Columbian ancestors were indigenous to the lands within the nations modern boundaries. These peoples were composed of numerous distinct tribes; bands; and ethnic groups; and many of these groups survive intact today as sovereign nations. The terms Native Americans use to refer to themselves vary regionally and generationally; with many older Native Americans self-identifying as "Indians" or "American Indians"; while younger Native Americans often identify as "Indigenous". Which terms should be used to refer to Native Americans has at times been controversial. The term "Native American" has been adopted by major newspapers and some academic groups; but has not traditionally included Native Hawaiians or certain Alaskan Natives; such as Aleut; Yupik; or Inuit peoples. Indigenous American peoples from Canada are known as First Nations.Contemporary Native Americans have a unique relationship with the United States because they may be members of nations; tribes; or bands with sovereignty and treaty rights. Cultural activism since the late 1960s has increased political participation and led to an expansion of efforts to teach and preserve Indigenous languages for younger generations and to establish a greater cultural infrastructure: Native Americans have founded independent newspapers and online media; recently including FNX; the first Native American television channel;established Native American studies programs; tribal schools and universities; and museums and language programs; and have increasingly been published as authors.I received this item discounted in exchange for my testing; inspecting and reviewing it. I like the books in the Baby Professor series but this one is not my favorite.By ElizabethI really like the ebooks in this "Baby Professor" series. Right now there are about 200 ebooks for either free or for 99 cents. This one currently is free therefore I give it a 4 star review. I would have given it a lower rating if I had paid for the full paperback price. If you look at the "Look Inside" feature on ; you can see the type of vivid pictures and paragraphs associated with each page. This format stays through out this book (and the others in the series as well.) Its full of fun shorts facts about the Indians that dont go into much detail. This book is a little different than the other books Ive read in the series because there are 2 facts one on each page then when you flip to the next page there is one big picture. Most of the books have very cool pictures on each page with the facts. This one seems a little lacking in that area. For example; it talks about a totem pole but there isnt even a picture of one.I do like these books though because I can pull these books up on my iPad and read them with my kids (or better yet have them read) at certain "down times" (waiting for the other one to finish sports practice; waiting in a doctors office; etc.) I also have a friend with a 3 year old daughter who I entertain sometimes during games and practices. I think she will really enjoy looking through the books and all the pictures.Overall very cool ebook series but this is not one of my favorites.*****I received this e-book for free in exchange for my honest review.*****0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Read !!!By OmenI got this book via download on my android kindle reader. First off I would like to say that I loved the look of the book it was very nicely illustrated with not so hard information for kids to be able to sink in to. Easy to remember and beautiful pictures to captivate them and pull them in deeper into the book. Great introduction into the Native Culture. It wasnt that long of a book truthfully and at the end the way it abruptly ended short like it did made me want to read more. Secondly as a First Nations Indigenous Sioux an Cree I have to say that allot of the information was correct thankfully since sadly most of the time these days it is pushed and buried away in the history; and with just having a new baby and a 10 year old this book was wonderful daughter looked at the pictures and just cooed :) great read I approve of it greatly.Pros: Instant downloadBeautifully illustratedperfect for parent/home school/teachersCons: Isnt that long of a bookabrupt end makes you want to read moreDisclaimer:I received this item at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review With that being said this is 100% my truthful review; If you are wondering as to how I rate the items I bought? Everything starts with all 5 stars... and depending on how good the item and how it works be that the way the item description claims to or not the stars tend to decrees from their it all depends on how it works to my expectations of the product. I am not paid to give a review that pleases the seller i am here to provide a constructive feedback on the items I bought in order to help you; the reader to make informed decision on which product to purchase to satisfy your needs. I did test/read this product before I gave my review I tend to review the product over a few days as to better give my self a better idea of how something is since first tries can go great or horrible thats why i take the time to personally review the items longer than most so if my review differs from what you the reader has seen its probably because the item isnt exactly the same one that I got and the seller/manufacturer has altered the product after my review and redone the item to improve on the integrity of the product if thats the case please dont let my review be the bases of all purchase decisions and seem inadequate. All my reviews come with pictures and or videos in the hopes that you see what I am getting in all ways. Unless its a digital download than I will do my best to take a picture of my tablet and or phone.
