Best for dedicated fans of all Zappa musicBy JordanThis book is "definitive" only as a general guide to Zappa as musician and composer across his 25 year career. There is little or nothing about his family life. his friendships. the movies he enjoyed. his favorite foods. what its like to be married to such a person. or have him as a father. or anything at all apart from composing. touring. playing. and recording his music. Its possible theres little or nothing to say about the non-music portions of his life: Zappa was clearly totally obsessed with and fixated on his music. a workaholic and perfectionist who ceaselessly wrote and re-wrote. re-configured and re-hashed the notes in his head. Slavens biography consists largely of quoting. paraphrasing and reacting to many reviews of Zappa recordings and concerts. and to previously published interviews of Zappa and a fairly small number of people who were involved with him at some point in his life. Slaven interviewed Zappa once a couple years before he died. and apparently did not receive the cooperation of the Zappa family for writing the book. I discovered Zappa in 1974 when a hippie friend of mine introduced me to "Hot Rats" and "Apostrophe." I then bought and frequently listened to just about everything he produced between 1969 and 1979. but then lost interest in the 1980s. turning more to whats now called "classic jazz." So I also lost interest in Slavens chronologically arranged book as it moved into that period. culminating in Zappas death from prostrate cancer in 1993. and even this final illness is barely discussed at all. The term has been used of him so often its now cliched. but no less true for that: Zappa was a genius. as a composer and guitar player.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Freak out!By Jeffrey CrawfordAmazingly detailed journey into Frank Zappas musical universe. But somehow. Neil Slaven doesnt really get to the heart of the man. What really made Frank tick? Its hard to say. but his incredible devotion to music is unquestionable. He must have been the single most prolific artist in rock music - what a work ethic. he made Prince look lazy. He was also incredibly cynical. which can wear thin at times. but hes hilarious when he has a conservative enemy to kick against (like Tipper Gore and her censorship campaign). His extensive tours and the complex way his albums and orchestral pieces were written is captured in vivid detail. which is often fascinating. but Zappa the man remains elusive.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. ... the usual rock musician fringe benefits (wink wink) and bad behavior. this is not that bookBy ShoemanIf youre looking for stories of the usual rock musician fringe benefits (wink wink) and bad behavior. this is not that book. If you want to know about FZs long career. discography. and continual development as a musician this is that book. It also illustrates the rotating door that his band(s) lineup reflected and why. In ways this reads more as a history lesson. but that is not necessarily a bad thing. It very well illustrates Zappas genius in music. social observation. and politics. and of course his biting wit as well.
