A pictorial history of a mid-western city before 1940By A CustomerThis book is one of a series by the same author and publisher. In 126 pages there are over 200 pictures from the late 1800s to the mid 1930s. The nine chapters have a short (one page or less) introduction. The body of the work is a set of photos from the Elgin Area Historical Society showing an image of the city and its people. Each photo has an extended caption to describe it. For those who live in Elgin this is a brief tour of the cities past (its first hundred years or so). However. because of the format of the book the context of most of Elgins history is unavailable to the reader. I would suggest reading this book along with "Elgin: An American History" by E.C. Mike Alft. Crossroads Communications. 1985. for a full understanding of Elgin and its history.
