[ebooks] Euripides: Trojan Women (Companions to Greek and Roman Tragedy) by Barbara Goff at Arts-Photography

Description

Anyone who hearts New York will love this illustrated homage to the city. Artist; author; and New Yorker Julia Rothman brings humor and tenderness to an eclectic assortment of historical tidbits (how the New York Public Library lion sculptures got their names); idiosyncratic places to visit (where to find the tennis courts at Grand Central Station); interviews with locals (thoughts on love from a Hasidic Jewish landlord); and personal recollections from growing up in the Bronx (fried fish at Johnnys Reef)mdash;all illuminated in her beloved signature style. A uniquely entertaining and informative city guide; this slice of the Big Apple will delight New York locals and visitors alike.

AlpherMany of these tunes would have been in any professional fiddlers repertoire in the 1960s to 1980s....however; this is new music to a new generation; who are "reviving" the music I was playing as a child. It is ironic how this happens when you arent looking! But; the discography is one of the best features of this book. It is very accurate; and shows original (or 2nd generation) sources for many tunes that I could have called up easily from memory (and still can). However; for the "neophyte" who has been excited by the music; some of it first recorded in the 1920s on 78 rpm records--or on vinyl LPs in the 1960s and 1970s; good luck finding them; because they didnt get made into CDs--not enough profit. This; I believe; will stand many soon-to-be rehabilitated record players of the 45; 33 rpm vintage in good stead; and theyre hard to find (I happen to have three; but theres a story there....). One of mine also played 16 2/3 and 78s; and the slowdown (and octave drop) is how I made the transition from classical violinist to fiddler--because none of the music was written down. No much of it is; but to be a "fiddler" you still have to hear the music in its original form. I recall the first "transcription" books I found were totally useless; because they could transcribe notes but not music. Thats why orchestras need conductors; and if you rely on this book alone; at festivals there will still be plenty of fiddlers showing you how youre "spozed" to play it. Trust me. Still; this is a bargain at the price!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Super Awesome Book!!!! Definitely my new favorite!!!!!By A DuranI ordered this because of the reviews it had received. Wow; I love this book so far! I just received it and Ive already added 2 new songs to my repertoire; super awesome. I thought I was receiving copy with the regular binding but the 3rd party vendor sent the spiral bound version for only 13 bucks which is even more super awesome! I definitely recommend for anybody looking for a solid source for fiddle tunes. Most tunes can be found on YouTube with tutorials for beginners also. This is NOT a lesson book; it is a collection of traditional fiddle songs. Enjoy!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great content - wish it was a tad smallerBy SMartThis is a great collection; according to my (incredibly talented) Celtic-bluegrass fiddle teacher - and its easy to use. Only thing I wish was that it was a bit smaller on the page; and spiral bound - at 8.5x11 I could scan and carry on my smartphone or tablet; its not light or easy to carry.
