Its Cabaret; weve got our heads down and were dancing and drinking as fast as we can. The enemy is on its way; but this time it doesnt have guns and gas it has storms and earthquakes; fire and brimstone.... You were the glimmer. At the end of the tunnel. And you went out.An all-pervasive fear of the future and a guilty pleasure in the excesses of the present drive Mike Bartletts epic rollercoaster of a play from 1968 to 2525 and back again.Earthquakes in London includes burlesque strip shows; bad dreams; social breakdown; population explosion; worldwide paranoia. It is a fast and furious metropolitan crash of people; scenes and decades; as three sisters attempt to navigate their dislocated lives and loves; while their dysfunctional father; a brilliant scientist; predicts global catastrophe.Mike Bartletts contemporary and directed dialogue combines a strong sense of humanity with epic ambition; as well as finely-aimed shafts of political comment embedded effortlessly into every scene.

The author is an expert on the subject and present and easy; yet very practical; and full of sense way of studying the score. If you have a score that you want to study you dont want to spend weeks of months readying a book about how to study a score. What you need is a brief; yet complete; description of the process. This book achieves that. I read it in three days and when I sat down to study a band score I made great use of my time. The book is filled with practical and musical advice. The reason why I do not give this book 5 stars is because the scores are very hard (almost impossible) to read because the font is very small. There is a score towards the end of the book with annotations; I could not read any of the notes: I tried on my two different kindles (paperwhite and fire) and on my laptop using the kindle app to no success. Editors should take this into consideration! Bottom line; this is not going to stop you from learning what you need to learn from this book; but it would have made the kindle edition much better. If you want to be able to read every single annotation (which makes sense) you might want to go with the paper edition.Overall I highly recommend the book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this is a great process to imitateBy ChanThis book basically taught me how to score study. Its succinct; to the point; and although Battisti is clearly a mad genius who would spend 100 hours on a 5 minute score; this is a great process to imitate. I dont know what I wouldve done in grad school without this resource. It was THE most important read in those 2 years for me. You can totally read the entire thing in about 2 hours too. I used it constantly as a reference thereafter; and I still do from time to time now as a professional High School Band Director.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great guide for score studyBy Maria OconnorBattistis book is easy to read and easy to apply to actual score study and conducting of a wind band. The inclusion of examples and organized charts makes score study a less daunting task; especially if someone is new to conducting and rehearsing a wind band.Though the examples and text is aimed specifically toward wind bands; the contents of the book can be applied toward any medium-large size ensemble score; including string or full orchestras.
