[PDF] Faking Ancient Mesoamerica by Nancy L Kelker; Karen O Bruhns at Arts-Photography

Description

The long-anticipated companion book to the groundbreaking HBO documentary The Latin Explosion by renowned music producer Tommy Mottola. Legendary music mogul; entertainment impresario; and New York Times bestselling author Tommy Mottola explores and expounds on his lifelong love of Latin music; its influence on his life and career; and its ever-growing influence in America. Tommy Mottola discovered a passion for Latin music when he was a small child on the streets of the Bronx; where he fell in love with the energy and rhythm of the legendary Tito Puente. It is a love he carries with him to this day. In A New America; Mottola explores the societal and cultural impact the Latino community and its music has had on America by sharing behind-the-scenes stories from his own life and his connection to the Latin sound throughout the decadesmdash;from his initial fascination with Latin music; which started with Puente; to the mainstream success of Ritchie Valens; to the groove-laden guitar wizardry of Carlos Santana. Along the way; Mottola reveals heartfelt accounts of his longtime collaboration and friendship with Gloria Estefan and her husband; Emilio; the meteoric rise and tragic end of Selena; and his orchestration of the Latin Explosion of the 1990s; which launched megastars such as Marc Anthony; Ricky Martin; Shakira; and Jennifer Lopez. But A New America is more than a story about music and musicians. It is the story of a culture that continues to grow and influence America in all its aspects and an irresistible sound that continues to move and inspire the nation. From the Hardcover edition.

Really opens your eyes to what youre seeing on display in museums and on the collectors market.0 of 5 people found the following review helpful. fakesBy Sebastian Carranza-LiraI read with interest this book. But I think that author arrives to no compleate believable conclusions. that almost all museum artifacts are fakes. The conclusions after reading this book is that one must be more careful when apreciating antiques.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. They claim that the majority of objects in museum collections are either loot or fake.By lyndonbrechtThis is an intriguing book by two knowledgeable scholars. Their book discusses how fakes are made and marketed. and also how they are discovered. Or perhaps as often. discovered but ignored. Unmasking an exhibition piece as a fake may be a scholarly triumph. but a museum donor will not be amused. So. museum conditions militate to being quiet about fakes. They write that the famous crystal skulls are all fakes. although not necessarily recent fakes. since manufacturing fake objects goes way back. Fakes are made of just about any genre of objects--steles. Moche ceramics. the Colima dogs sculpture. and often the fakes are of quite high quality. Most fakes are made for tourists. but the best counterfeiters create museum-quality fakes. The authors suggest that the majority of objects in museum collections are either loot or fakes. They offer detail on some of the fakes. and imply that some high-flying dealers are involved. as is to some degree organized crime. Faking techniques can be formidable: codices for example can be faked but use real Mayan materials. How its done is fascinating. This is an eye-opening book. written with passion and some humor. now and then a bit self-righteous and now and then some of the phrasing is clunky.
