Over three decades; Paul Griffithss survey has remained the definitive study of music since the Second World War; this fully revised and updated edition re-establishes Modern Music and After as the preeminent introduction to the music of our time. The disruptions of the war; and the struggles of the ensuing peace; were reflected in the music of the time: in Pierre Boulezs radical reformation of compositional technique and in John Cages development of zen music; in Milton Babbitts settling of the serial system and in Dmitry Shostakovichs unsettling symphonies; in Karlheinz Stockhausens development of electronic music and in Luigi Nonos pursuit of the universally human; in Iannis Xenakiss view of music as sounding mathematics and in Luciano Berios consideration of it as language. The initiatives of these composers and their contemporaries opened prospects that havent yet stopped unfolding. This constant expansion of musical thinking since 1945 has left us with no singular history of music; Griffithss study accordingly follows several different paths; showing how and why they converge and diverge. This new edition of Modern Music and After discusses not only the music of the fifteen years that have passed since the previous edition; but also the recent explosion of scholarly interest in the latter half of the twentieth century. In particular; the book has been expanded to incorporate the variety of responses to the modernist impasse experienced by composers of the 1980s and 1990s. Griffiths then moves the book into the twenty-first century as he examines such highly influential composers as Helmut Lachenmann and Salvatore Sciarrino. For its breadth; wealth of detail; and characteristic wit and clarity; the third edition of Modern Music and After is required reading for the student and the enquiring listener.

Her step father was involved with the polo teams in early Hollywood so she grew up knowing Spencer Tracy. Leslie Howard. Jack Holt. Guinn "Big Boy" Williams. and Clark Gable. She was an excellent horsewoman so decided to become a stunt girl starting first as Anne Baxters double in Yellow Sky. The book details her work in numerous films and doubling for stars such as Eleanor Parker . Claudette Colbert. Rhonda Fleming. and both Carroll Baker and Jean Simmons in The Big Country.. among others. The book details her work in films but also her love and care of horses. There is a sub-plot involving her beloved horse Frosty who she raised from a small runt that no one wanted to a beautiful horse that was in numerous commercials and famous on the Las Vegas strip. I only wish she would have told us more about what happened to Frosty. Perhaps she is working on a sequel - I sure hope so. The book details the struggles of being a stunt woman and getting in the business and what it took to be successful. Highly recommended for any fan of Hollywood or any horse lover.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Loved this wonderful. well-written story!!By Georgia AllisonThe back cover of FALL GIRL says. "fascinating insiders memoir of the American entertainment industry". This is undoubtedly true. but this little gem of a book is really so much more! I would say that this book is about the courage and strength of a woman to make it in a mans world. And. to do so in a gracious. modest and seemingly unassuming manner. Martha simply seems to have done it all. and at a time when most women were fated to fill more traditional roles. This book really has something for everyone...perhaps a book for all ages. and it is rich with details. and wonderful old photographs. Horse lovers. riders. trainers. movie buffs. historians. lovers of old Hollywood. adventure and thrill seekers. or world travelers. I think it is all here. even Marilyn Monroe. Clark Gable. and Elvis!! I was captivated by all the tremendous details of the movies Martha worked on. and the complexity of the actual stunts. and the behind the scenes look at the movies. down to the temperament and personalities of so many stars and luminaries that crossed her path. The special. and I would even say. amazing horse stories. really say that she had some sort of magical connection with horses. seemingly within her heart as she says. I think you will particularly love the stories about "Frosty". If you love to be transported to a different time and place you will simply love this book. I think you will. as I did. also come to admire a woman that accomplished so much in her life. fearlessly. and tirelessly. I would further say that Chrystopher Spicer has helped Martha present so clearly and concisely. a wonderful chronicle of a life lived in the spotlight. but yet with dignity. humility. and much grace. As I read Marthas story I could not help but think what a fabulous movie this book would make. How wonderful it would be to have such a positive role model for us all! You will not be disappointed in this book!! Although the title is "FALL GIRL". I could not help but say to myself. you GO GIRL!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. more movie star. less horse infoBy bggI was disappointed. I really wanted to like this book. If youre looking for insights on training or riding horse tricks. not really here. Mostly she talks about Hollywood names. If you enjoy hearing about the Hollywood environment. you might enjoy it. I got bored with all the stories about it when I dont really care who they were. Ended up mostly skimming it for the "horsey" parts. which were not really that much. Im giving it to my mom (whos 80 and loves horses). as she might care more about movie stars from the 40s. I do think the author must have been an impressive horsewoman and had quite the personality. and I would have liked to hear more about the training methods. but the book just didnt do that.
