Description

Mark C. Taylor recounts a poignant love affair not with a person but with a place that; paradoxically; cannot be easily localized. For many years; Taylor has lived in the Berkshire Mountains; where he writes and creates land art and sculpture. In a world of mobile screens and virtual realities; where speed is the measure of success and place is disappearing; his work slows down thought and brings life back to earth to give readers time to ponder the importance of place before it slips away.Taylor extends reflection beyond the page and returns with new insights about what is hiding in plain sight all around us. Weaving together words; objects; and images; his artful work enacts what it describes. Things long familiar suddenly appear strange; and the strange; unexpected; and unprogrammed unsettle readers in surprising ways. This timely meditation gives pause in the midst of harried lives and turns attention toward what we usually overlook: night; silence; touch; grace; ghosts; water; earth; stones; bones; idleness; infinity; slowness; and contentment. Recovering Place is a unique work that lingers long after the book is closed.

ThomasOceans; Seas; Lakes and Rivers is the second in the ldquo; Why Does it Happen?rdquo; series books that I read with my children on Kindle. I actually read this one right after reading the Planets; Outer Space and the Atmosphere. These books really draw out excitement for reading with my kids. It sounds so clicheacute; to say ldquo;Their Eyes Light Uprdquo; but in all honesty; they were so elated and they did. The pictures were clear and bright; prompting repeated ldquo;Oohsrdquo; and ldquo;Ahhsrdquo; even got a ldquo;Woweeerdquo; They even talked about swimming and how cool it would be to jump off into a waterfall. *Smile* The definitions are very well written and not complicated to understand. I really appreciated the completeness of this book because being a homeschooling mom can be challenging with the various ages of my kids; different learning patterns. Their curriculum are so different but I noticed the bond they developed with the previous book; continued when reading Oceans; Seas; Lakes and Rivers. Still kept them attentive and asking questions. It showed the good side of nature and its beauty; it mildly touch its down side. Nowadays with kids wanting everything learning to be animated and games; I am happy; no I am grateful I found these books from Baby Professor. This is an excellent ebook for kidsBy rkreviewerThis is an excellent ebook for kids! As a teacher of elementary students; I would love to incorporate this ebook into a small group activity where I present a main idea or topic to the whole class and then they break up in small groups and discover more material on their own. My mind was continuously racing as I read through this book thinking of different projects I could make on this topic. It is the perfect age group to let them use a kindle to explore and what a better way to do so than with this ebook! I will totally let other teachers know of this opportunity and will keep this seller in mind with other ebooks available. I received this product free for reviewing purposes; however my opinions are all my own.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. awesome book!!!By Crystal HipsmanTry teaching a young child about oceans; seas and rivers and other bodies of water and you will most certainly have a difficult time capturing his/her attention. A picture book increases your childs attention span. The pictures help in stimulating the imagination and creativity so a child would feel like he/she is "in the story". The pictures are really great. Some are very simple and others are quite detailed. My son enjoyed looking at them and asking questions and pointing out little things in each one. We are very big fans of ebooks. Just know that this book wouldnt be very good on the paperwhite (black and white version) because this book is in color and it just wouldnt look that great. We have used it on the ipad and the computer and it looks great. I love that I can load a bunch of these types of books up onto my ipad for trips and he has the ability to flip through tons of books without the huge bag of books! Having a big variety of books on hand at all times; especially education books like this are always a plus. I highly recommend you get a wide variety of the books to keep you children entertained! What I love about this publisher is the excellent quality of photos that they include in all of their books. Itrsquo;s more than just stock photos that are put together for the topic at hand and are well-placed and thought out.My son always tells me that he has a hard time focusing on books at school because they are filled with words. (And; yes; we have told him; thatrsquo;s what books are.) He is just such a visual learner that without a break from the monotony of strictly words; descriptions and/or information; he loses interest really fast. The great thing about these books that we have been reading from this publisher is that he stays interested throughout. The only downside is that he wants to linger on one page longer than if he were to simply read a book; but thatrsquo;s because the pictures are so awesome. They did up the vocabulary for this one as opposed to the others that were geared towards 3rd grade and below which was a great change of pace for us and really peaked my sonrsquo;s interest that much more.I am glad that I got a chance to read this book to my kids.I received this free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review
