Description

ldquo;Writing about yourself is a funny businesshellip; But in a project like this; the writer has made one promise; to show the reader his mind. In these pages; Irsquo;ve tried to do this.rdquo; mdash;Bruce Springsteen; from the pages of Born to RunIn 2009; Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowlrsquo;s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. Thatrsquo;s how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years; Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life; bringing to these pages the same honesty; humor; and originality found in his songs. He describes growing up Catholic in Freehold; New Jersey; amid the poetry; danger; and darkness that fueled his imagination; leading up to the moment he refers to as ldquo; The Big Bangrdquo;: seeing Elvis Presleyrsquo;s debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. He vividly recounts his relentless drive to become a musician; his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park; and the rise of the E Street Band. With disarming candor; he also tells for the first time the story of the personal struggles that inspired his best work; and shows us why the song ldquo;Born to Runrdquo; reveals more than we previously realized. Born to Run will be revelatory for anyone who has ever enjoyed Bruce Springsteen; but this book is much more than a legendary rock starrsquo;s memoir. This is a book for workers and dreamers; parents and children; lovers and loners; artists; freaks; or anyone who has ever wanted to be baptized in the holy river of rock and roll. Rarely has a performer told his own story with such force and sweep. Like many of his songs (ldquo;Thunder Road;rdquo; ldquo;Badlands;rdquo; ldquo;Darkness on the Edge of Town;rdquo; ldquo; The River;rdquo; ldquo;Born in the U.S.A.;rdquo; ldquo; The Rising;rdquo; and ldquo; The Ghost of Tom Joad;rdquo; to name just a few); Bruce Springsteenrsquo;s autobiography is written with the lyricism of a singular songwriter and the wisdom of a man who has thought deeply about his experiences.

Marion County and Sequatchie Valley History comes to life at your fingertips in this awesome book!By Logan CarmichaelAs an almost lifelong resident of Marion County; Tennessee and a lover of history; in general; I couldnt wait any longer to have a physical copy of this book aside from the Kindle copy Id purchased previously. Seeing images of the towns and places that make up my hometown and county gives one a perspective of how great Marion County has always been and continues to be with every year. The rich history of coal mining in the valley; our once lively downtowns; historic places such as The Princess Theatre; the former Pryor Academy; and the areas around Hales Bar Dam and the later Nickajack Lake give one born a few years too late the ability to travel back in time and see these places theyve heard so much about. The pictures are what makes this book so great; but the well-researched information provided is invaluable when putting all of the pieces of our countys history together. Thank you; to Billy Frank Morrison and the other contributors for their hard work and efforts to make this possible and to bring history alive at our fingertips. Your efforts will hopefully one day be carried on by a young child of today when writing the next chapter of our countys history were living now. If you are from or grew up in Marion County and the Sequatchie Valley or have a love for small town (specifically small Tennessee town) history -- I highly recommend this book!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Looking Forward to Volume IIBy SusanQuote from the book: In 1958; during a quintessential testosterone moment brought on by a dare; the author jumped from the bridge.Fortunately; the old adage; "with age comes wisdom;" is apparently true. Or maybe it had something to do with low testosterone. Whatever the reason; the author did turn out a delicious slice of Marion County; TN history; packed with delightful postcards and generously sprinkled with tidbits of information from locals.Heads up to family historians: Where possible; the author has included the identities of many of the persons featured on the postcards. If youre from Marion County or if youre a descendant of Marion Countians; this book will; no doubt; be a treasured window into some part of your past. Theres a little bit of everything about a little bit of everywhere in it. For me; personally; because of my interest in the history of the area and its people; this well-crafted book is worth a lot more than what I paid for it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
