This book on the other hand is heavy going. It is a real eye-opener that reveals the ugly truth under the glittery surface that one - I at least - still associate with Vienna. Everyone should read this book because it helps to understand what is going on in Europe right now; after all these years. Its easy but unfair to judge a 19th century person. They didnt know about political correctness and other modern goodies that we have to contend with.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful overview of fin de siecle ViennaBy Waldorf StatlerThis book provides an in-depth overview of the politics; art and society of Vienna around the turn of the century. Schorskes writing style does not make for an easy read but the motivated reader will surely learn a lot about the likes of Gustav Klimt; Sigmund Freud; Theodor Herzl and Arnold Schoenberg as well as the world they lived in.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent overview of late 19th-century Viennas unique social and cultural ...By Mike BarnesAn excellent overview of late 19th-century Viennas unique social and cultural situation. The ascendancy and sudden decline of the liberal political class to forces of nationalism and economic inequality and protest seem frighteningly similar to today.
