Great art comes from great pain.Or thats the impression left by the haunting profiles in Tortured Artists; which examines the maladies that drive creative types to the brink of despair and the inspired works that are born from their anguish. The book comprises illuminating profiles of forty-eight celebrated figures from literature; music; drama; and visual art. The artists are a carefully chosen mix of pioneers and mavericks whose creative contributions have forever changed their respective mediums -- everyone from Charles Schulz to Charlie Parker; Michelangelo to Madonna; Andy Warhol to Amy Winehouse. Each profile in Tortured Artists has a specific goal: to show how pain and suffering inspired the subjects art; thereby revealing the common thread that binds artistic expression of every conceivable type. As much an appreciation of artistic genius as an accessible study of the artistic psyche; Tortured Artists illustrates the surprising extent to which inner and outer turmoil fuel the creative process.

Great little Paris CompanionBy Mark NormanOn a recent six day trip to Paris we found this slim little volume to be a wonderful guide to some memorable walks. The directions were clear. the maps well laid out. and the accompanying text is concise enough to read while on the walk. There are many books with walks. and we had them all including Rick Steves and the Knopf city guide. but we kept going back to this book. Highly recommended.30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Excellent helpfulBy M. M. Dream Walks in Paris - Go There By ReadingBy alabasterchambersPerfect strolls about Paris which will be a treat to those who have been and those who plan to go - full of insights about French celebrities of generations past. Good clear maps. charming anecdotes about all sorts of people from various walks of life who traversed these boulevards. ate in these cafes (many still open for business). mourned or were mourned in such grand houses of worship. A book definitely for those who love Paris. not to be missed. My only faults with it. if you could call it that. is that it lacks the birth and death years of each celeb. so I made my own list to paste inside the cover (i.e.. Matisse 1869 - 1954) - a sense of time helps while reading the biographies. I also made another list of cafes so I dont walk past them unawares on future jaunts. Ah. Paris!
