These and other; similar images appeared widely on stages and screens across America during the early twentieth century. In this provocative study; M. Alison Kibler uncovers; for the first time; powerful and concurrent campaigns by Irish; Jewish and African Americans against racial ridicule in popular culture at the turn of the twentieth century. Censoring Racial Ridicule explores how Irish; Jewish; and African American groups of the era resisted harmful representations in popular culture by lobbying behind the scenes; boycotting particular acts; and staging theater riots. Kibler demonstrates that these groups tactics evolved and diverged over time; with some continuing to pursue street protest while others sought redress through new censorship laws. Exploring the relationship between free expression; democracy; and equality in America; Kibler shows that the Irish; Jewish; and African American campaigns against racial ridicule are at the roots of contemporary debates over hate speech.

I have read most f it already; and I find it to be VERY informative. I have been in the film industry for almost 10 years now and I am impressed to see how much information is in this manual.They have pictures of a lot of the forms; contracts and legal documents you will need to get stuff done. You can easily emulate them on Microsoft Word. The only thing that would make this book better would be to include photocopyable versions of these documents.The producers who wrote this book produced SWINGERS and KISSING JESSICA STEIN. However; the CD bound into the book DOES NOT contain content for this book. Apparently the publisher got a bunch of discs labelled for this book but with some kind of astronomy software content. YIKES!!!! I hate to return the book in order to get another (probably wrong) disc but I will try it once.
