Heterotopia; literally meaning lsquo;other placersquo;; is a rich concept in urban design that describes a space that is on the margins of ordered or civil society; and one that possesses multiple; fragmented or even incompatible meanings. The term has had an impact on architectural and urban theory since it was coined by Foucault in the late 1960s but it has remained a source of confusion and debate since. Heterotopia and the City seeks to clarify this concept and investigates the heterotopias which exist throughout our contemporary world: in museums; theme parks; malls; holiday resorts; gated communities; wellness hotels and festival markets. With theoretical contributions on the concept of heterotopia; including a new translation of Foucaultrsquo;s influential 1967 text; Of Other Space and essays by well-known scholars; the book comprises a series of critical case studies; from Beaubourg to Bilbao; which probe a range of (post)urban transformations and which redirect the debate on the privatization of public space. Wastelands and terrains vagues are studied in detail in a section on urban activism and transgression and the reader gets a glimpse of the extremes of our dualized; postcivil condition through case studies on Jakarta; Dubai; and Kinshasa.Heterotopia and the City provides a collective effort to reposition heterotopia as a crucial concept for contemporary urban theory. The book will be of interest to all those wishing to understand the city in the emerging postcivil society and post-historical era. Planners; architects; cultural theorists; urbanists and academics will find this a valuable contribution to current critical argument.

There is a cool selection of origami things to make; however it took me 2 hours to make one of the simpler ones because I couldnt figure out what it was "showing" you to do! there is literaly 1 or NO words in every set of "instructions" like "turn".....well ok but WHICH WAY?? It would be a little better if the steps were smaller because once I did figure out that step; I said to myself; " there could be at least 1 or 2 more steps in between these 2 steps!!" So i dont recommend this book for people who dont have a lot of paitience!!! :(0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of My FavoritesBy rensThis book is one of my favorites. I gave it as a gift for a jr. high age boy excited about paper folding. He had already tried several projects successfully from my own copy. There are origami projects from "easy" to "challenging" within the book; satisfying all levels of paper folding. I really like how pictures of the actual project blend into a full color illustration of what it is. Step-by-step directions are understandable if you know the basics of paper folding.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Book was a gift for my granddaughter.By Mary MartinThis was a perfect choice for a six year old. She and her mom look forward to creating fun items. The directions are clear; as are the pictures of how to fold.
